Hi Everyone, I am pretty new to this and still learning tricks of the trade, honestly the reason I got into it was all because I was searching for a pair of nice pair of soft sole moccasins and couldn’t find ones I like so, I decided I would make my own. My first attempt honestly did not go well I learned a lot about what not to do and things I can do differently second pair was made from pieces of suede I found at hobby lobby, I can’t count how many times I stitched ,unstitched ,modified my pattern and did it again, after about 2 weeks of working on them on and off I was finally done, and I’m pretty sure I work them consistently the entirety of the whole COVID lockdown, my next few pairs were for my girlfriend and at the time 2 children. After wearing them around for sometime people started to show some interest in them and I had a few requests for some custom designs ( side note, I don’t know about you guys but the moment you hand the finished product to the customer is absolutely terrifying, but seeing the reactions when they saw them and put them on was one of the coolest feelings I have ever felt, since then I haven’t had a lot of time but I managed to make a few other pairs I still need to post on to my Reddit which I will link my forum because I have no idea how to get pictures on here haha but any input or advice would be gratefully appreciated, thanks for reading! https://www.reddit.com/r/BessMoccasins/

Hi all, My name is Gerard and I'm from Co. Offaly in Ireland. I've been leather crafting for a short time and only came across this site today. Looks great and i will be very busy looking through all the information here over the next few weeks. I don't have a lot to add at the moment except a small YouTube video i recorded for a few friends and family to look at, but i might as well add it here too. I will be adding another short video on YouTube shortly where my mother gave me some thread and wax my father had used more than 50 years ago. We'll see how it turns out...

Hi Everyone, I am just getting into leatherwork and would greatly appreciate some help/advice on a few topics. I’ve been doing a lot of practice tooling and carving on Herman oak veg tan pieces and would like to try my hand at a lighter, more pliable, and higher end leather hides. However I’ve had a hard time locating a company here in the US which has a vast selection of similar hides and exotic skins. Through watching some of Ian Atkinson’s videos I found that he recomends the hide company that I’ve linked below. Perhaps you know of it as well. If anyone knows of a company that is basically the US alternative to this company I would be very grateful if you could tell me about it. Also I’m looking into upgrading my swivel knife. I’ve landed on a leather wranglers SK-3 knife. If you guys know of a higher quality knife or one that is better than the SK-3 please let me know. Thank you guys. First of I'm new to the forums, my name is Jordan and I just started getting into leather craft like a month or two ago. I originally wanted to make motorcycle seats but the more I've been messing around I've been wanting to make different things! that being said, I just bought a super clean singer 29-4. I ordered some #69 bonded nylon and it finally came in today. I've been trying to mess around and get the machine to sew in some 2-4oz vegtan single layer but the thread will go in the first hole then just lay across the rest of the holes. I read somewhere that if it does that the tension is too loose, but the shuttle is as tight as it will go and if I tighten the disks anymore the thread stops. But when I try to sew denim it sews almost perfect. Am I missing something??? I'd appreciate any help or info! Thank you! Quote

For the HAND SEWING LEATHER WORKERS out there- <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/1WOKsT64yEA" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> This "How To" video was made for my buddy in Balian. This video includes how to begin stitching with the sewing awl, finish the seam, splice in longer thread, replace your bobbin, and replace the needle. So glad to share this with other handy people in the How To World. The sewing awl is an amazing tool. For the past 6 years, it has been a fruitful partner. This method is THREE TIMES FASTER than sewing with a single needle and thread. The sewing machine is great for leather, but sometimes it just can't handle seams that refuse to lay flat. As a general rule, if you can use a sewing machine- do. When you can't, the sewing awl is a versatile and efficient option. The best sewing awl I've found yet, is the one sold through "Tandy Leather Factory." If you don't have one of these Tandy shops in your city, it's easy to purchase through Amazon, Ebay, or Tandyleatherfactory.com. Expect to pay between 14-18$ for the tool. Buy "waxed poly sewing awl thread" to go with it. A big spool of waxed poly thread ranges from 6-20$ - Sold at the same online locations. Links provided below. Try to avoid buying a sewing awl with a hidden bobbin- like the "Speedy Stitcher"- this sewing awl is no good because you can't rewind the thread, and controlling the thread tension is much harder. While you're at it- order a replacement needle for when it does break. Because it will break. That needle is another 3$ well worth it. Your future self with thank you. Get a "size 8" needle. That is what you see here in the video. "Size 5" is smaller, but the sewing awl thread feels too big for it (sometimes when pulling the needle out, the needle will get stuck.) The instructions one the back of the sewing awl will leave you wanting. No, no, there is no instruction booklet that fell out. "Surely this can't be it" - you will think. Worry not, dear friend. Here is all you need to get your leather project underway. Important note: the rubber mat you see here allows the needle point to stay sharp, and reduce the risk of snapping your needle or stabbing your leg. I highly recommend getting a rubber mat. But if you are cheap, an old yoga mat folded in half will be fine. This tutorial comes from the leather design studio of Ahni Radvanyi. Fore Sale Juki 441, extra heavy duty sewing machine for sale. bought it couple of month ago for hobby. I am unable to use the machine now as I am occupied with work and studies and soon will be moving from the place and hence for sale.
