  1. Here's some Arizona Bell chaps I finished up a couple days ago. Thanks for viewing! Ryan
  2. Hello all! Finished saddle 3! It's a 14.5" Olin Young ranch roper. Can't thank Travis Kading enough for letting me do this build at his saddlery and for all the help he gave me along the way! Especially for showing me how to do those single piece swells.
  3. Hello, guys! So as a leatherworker, I thought I should be wearing a belt that I made... so I made one my style... thick. I used two pieces of 9 oz leather at 1.5 inches wide... do the math and you get an 18 oz thick belt. I glued the flesh sides together and then stitched it up so I have the smooth on both sides. It's like lining it with itself. It should last the rest of my life as well as my future kids and grandkids and so forth. It will also make a very good spanking strap. (Note: I did not make my dad one.) Comments/critique welcome. Oh, and before you ask, no, I didn't win the buckle. Thanks for looking! -Ryan
  4. Here's a heavy set of boar hide chaps for the workin cowboy.
  5. Hi all! It's been a little while since I've posted. Here's the latest thing off the bench. This is also my first time free-handing sheridan-style carving. Let me know what you think. Comments/critique always welcome.
  6. Here's a noseband I made a little while ago. I think nosebands are pretty fun pieces to make. Side note: If you're border line is the same width as the thickness of the leather, you get a cool, very round looking border. Thanks for looking! All the best, Ryan
  7. Hello! First time doing filigree and yes, I got a 2" slot punch! Pretty happy with how it turned out.
  8. Hello all! Here is my second saddle I finished just in time for the leather trade show in Prescott. I was beyond thankful to get 2nd place! I learned so much from judges Gordon Andrus, Bob Klenda, and Al Gould. What a great experience! Can't wait to start on number 3 and make it even better! Saddle details: 15-1/2" Hogg roper tree with leg-cuts. Thoroughbred leather All hardware was from my good friend Gordy Alderson.
  9. Hello all! Here's a roper saddle a friend asked me to replace the seat and fenders with a rough-out seat and fenders. It's a Vaquero stock saddle made by D. L. Moe. My friend said he didn't like how the padded seat was so high and said a deeper rough-out seat would be worth more to him than a tooled padded seat. I removed the seat and worked on the ground seat a little (there were some bumps under the pad). I also cleaned the tooled areas and put a new finish on it. It was a shame to replace all the beautiful tooling, but at the same time, I'd personally much rather work in the deeper rough-out seat than in that padded seat. Here's before: Here's after: Critique always welcome. Thanks! Ryan
  10. Hello all! Here is my first saddle build. It's a 13 inch youth saddle for my younger siblings. (I figured my first saddle should for kids who wouldn't mind all the mistakes.) It took me 20 days from start to finish on this rig. I used thoroughbred leather. It's far from perfect so if you have any critique I'd love to hear it! Thanks! Ryan
  11. Here are some heavy weight breast collars I made for Christmas. 13-15 oz. Saddle skirting from Thoroughbred leather lined with 5-6 oz latigo. Used tan kote, olive oil, and Fiebing's tan antique finish to get the color.
  12. Here's a custom rifle sling I did a few weeks ago. I lined the shoulder part with 4-5 oz bison with the flesh side out so it won't slip off the shoulder as easily. Also, I noticed that the bison edges burnish pretty well with the veg tan. Ryan
  13. Hey all! Here's a couple tooled belts I did. I used Thoroughbred's golden skirting and split it. Filled in the background with a paintbrush using fiebings usmc black dye. Lined them with 3-4 oz veg tan. The one with the brand I made for a friend in exchange for a roping steer so I thought that was a pretty good trade! I'm still new to tooling belts so if have any advice on the floral design I'd love to hear it. Comments/critique more than welcome.
  14. Here's something fresh off the bench. These are bison leather shotgun chaps for a cowboy friend of mine. We were rounding up cattle in heavy thickets and he needed chaps badly. Our shirts keep getting torn but I don't think I can fix that. This leather is great working chap leather because it is very tough but supple enough to be comfortable but it is a little scarred. He was very pleased with them. Let me know what you think. Comments/critique welcome.
  15. Hello all! Here is a leather tote bag I finished a while ago. The handles are an 8 strand round braid and the first thing I've braided. The leather is 8oz veg-tan with soft pigskin lining on the inside. The sheridan pattern is my own work. This is also my first time using a bar grounder in my carving. Let me know what you think! Critique welcome. -Ryan
  16. Hello! Here is a wallet I am working on. Still trying to improve at figure carving so any tips/advice is appreciated. Ryan
  17. Here are some chink chaps I made for two of my sisters. I think they turned out pretty well and they are getting a lot of use. Let me know what you think. Critique is always welcome. Thanks for viewing! Ryan
  18. Hello! Here is a noseband I made for my horse's hackamore. Hope you like it! -Ryan P.S. I now have an Instagram page as a gallery for my work. You can see it at www.doublercustomleather.com
  19. Hello all! Here is a roper wallet (or long wallet) that I just finished for myself. Btw, my nickname is Nate in case you're confused. I needed to make myself a wallet so I could have some of my work with me when meeting potential customers. Also, my Cabela's wallet was falling apart. It is lined with Tandy's super soft pigskin. When I showed it to my dad, he said I should have stamped "A fool and his money are soon parted" on the inside flap... (I think I should have done that too considering how often I go to Tandy... ) Let me know what you think! Comments/critique always welcome. Thanks for looking! -Ryan
  20. Hello, again! Here is the gun belt to the holster I posted earlier. A friend commissioned me to make it for his 45 Colt Ruger Blackhawk. He's a big fan of tie-down roping and asked me to incorporate some roping scenes. Let me know what you think and please ask if you have any questions. -Ryan
  21. Coffee... it's the secret to my leather work. Made this for myself in a little gap between some larger orders. (Nate is my nickname.) Also, this is my first time making a leather handle so please critique where needed. Let me know what you think. I'll try and get some better pics later. Pair of bison hide working chaps coming soon. -Ryan
  22. Hello, again! Yeah, I've been busy. Just finished up some spur straps and a breast collar for me and my horse Patty. I did the tooling on the breast collar to match my saddle. Spur straps are 8/9 oz. veg tan and the breast collar is 10/12 oz. saddle skirting (Tandy) and lined with 5/6 oz. latigo. I went on a long ride and the collar worked great and seemed pretty comfortable for the horse so I'm happy with it. Let me know what you think. Critique welcome. Thanks for looking! -Ryan
  23. Hello all! My dad asked me to make him a pair of chaps. The deal was that he'd buy the materials and I'd do the work. Sorry, but that was a special deal for dad only. This took me about 40 hours to do. All of the pattern/design is my own work. Let me know what you think! I will post some pics of my dad wearing them soon. Thanks for looking! -Ryan
  24. Here is another wallet I just finished for my brother's 18th birthday (today). It is stingray and pigskin. Comments/critique are welcome. Thanks for looking! -Ryan
  25. Here is a recent creation of mine for a friend. She is moving away and asked if I could make her a billfold. She said if I could possibly carve a silhouette of a horse, that would be great... and of course when someone is easy to please and doesn't want you to go through a lot of trouble, it just makes you want to go all out on it. And I happen to know she really likes duns and buckskins. The veg tan is 4 oz belly and the lining is pigskin. It is machine stitched. I tried something new in my stamping by spacing my camouflage a little more and then adding a seeder dot in between them. I actually think it looks pretty good that way. Any questions? Comments/critique are always welcome. Thanks for looking! -Ryan
