  1. Hello! I waited too long to start my cosplay for comic con, so the detailing on these are really lacking. They will be painted black once they dry- I am currently wet molding them on my dress form. (I know I probably should have waited to rivet until after I painted, but couldn't figure out how to make sure all the pieces stretched and formed together without the rivets). I am wondering if anyone has ideas on how to keep these in place without any visible straps. They will be worn on top of a faux leather jacket, as shown in the cover art. Right now, my best idea is to glue some Velcro on the flesh side of the pauldrons, and then fasten the other half of the Velcro to the top edge of the jacket shoulders. I would welcome other ideas though, because I really kind of hate Velcro (and fear the glue won't hold)!
  2. Shoulder holster I just finished. Made with 6-7 oz leather (I think, cant remember for sure). Purchased already cut straps. Tried to antique the holster to show off the tooling, but wound up antiquing the whole thing. Still have much to learn. Sunflowers and dragonfly are stamped and painted. Holds a 380. Got the holster pattern from my daughter and had to cut it down to fit the pistol. The yoke was designed by me. Critiques welcomed. I know the stamping on the straps is substandard. I tried to tool some scrolling and wound up stamping over it. There are extra holes in the straps as I had to adjust for size. But it fits well and I will be wearing it for awhile to see how it feels. The rectangle on the holster is where the clip goes that holds it on. When I was fitting it for the holster, I noticed it scratching the leather, so I made a place for it to scratch without messing with the tooling. It was fairly easy, except for figuring out how long to make the straps.
  3. This bag was designed for an exhibition in Taiwan. I wanted to design a bag that I thought reflected something unique about Taiwan and my experiences living here for the past 20 years. One of the 1st things about Taiwan that grabbed my attention the 1st day I arrived was the swarm of motorbikes that covered the streets. Motorbikes or scooters are by far the preferred form of transportation throughout Taiwan and they vastly outnumber all other forms of transportation on the densely-populated Island. These compact modes of transportation are favored for their convenience in parking and inexpensive maintenance. But as convenient as they are, they are also quite dangerous and it's not uncommon to see accidents daily. I myself have been in 2 over the years, resulting in breaking a shoulder in each accident. I have since thrown in the towel and now drive a car with lots of airbags..! Regardless, these bikes have left a deep impression on my life and so I decided to create a luxury bag built around the properties of a scooter tire. Coming up with a design I really liked that would work well with the shape and weight of the tire was challenging at 1st, but eventually the concept came to life. The 1st challenge I had starting out was finding the right tire for the job. So, I went to a large motorbike shop and to my surprise after hearing about my plans to design a bag out of a tire they began to enthusiastically bring out every tire they had in their collection for me to choose from. This made finding the right tire a whole lot easier and they have my sincerest appreciation..! To make this project a piece of art and not just a bag I wanted to incorporate the use of a variety of exotic leathers, such as horse leather, gazelle fur, and fine Italian tanned leathers on different components of the bag to give it a richly exotic look and feel. To lighten the weight of the bag I have removed any unnecessary rubber from the tire and have used extra thick (3mm thick) Leather to provide the bag with strength and support for the tires shape and weight. Every component you see on the bag was cut, dyed, and stitched together by hand using only traditional techniques... The end result was better than I could have expected! After spending about 2 months coming up with a design I spent about another 50 -60 hours to build the bag itself! Since then I have come up with 3 distinct designs for the tire bag for both larger and smaller tires. If you'd like to see more pictures of this bag and some of my other leather artwork and designs, please visit my page at www.fischerworkshops.com Thanks!!!

  5. Anybody can use A-grade single shoulders? At the moment, I need the SPACE more than I need the leather! I'll post a sketch here of what is available, and if there's any interest I'll get pics of the ACTUAL piece(s) you'll get later today. Single shoulders, cut from Grade A cowhide backs (no bellies). I certainly have some, lemme know what type of square footage you need and I may be able to cut one larger for you (sorry, not interested in cutting them smaller). Oh, to clarify - these are about 7 sq ft (32" x 32" -- ish, not including the neck, which I'll GIVE you). A- grade @ $10 / ft
  6. Hi, I'm hoping somebody here could answer some of my questions. I'm interested in learning how to work leather and making belts but I'm not sure what leather to buy. I know it should be in the neighbourhood of 8-10 oz (for belts) but I'm not sure what cut I should buy (double shoulder?). If somebody could recommend a cut that would be great. I'm probably going to buy from tandy this time and I would prefer un-dyed. I'm also wondering how belts (1.5") I can expect to cut from the piece I buy. Thanks!
  7. Hello leatherworkers! This is my first post, thank you in advance for everything! I make a folding "camping" stool. I was originally buying oil tanned cow hides (5/6-7/8) and then strap cutting any which way to get as many straps as possible. I soon realized that some straps would be more stretchy than others, and some would be really way too stretchy. This I learned was a result of cutting the hide the wrong way at times, but also from using different parts of the hide that are maybe not suited for straps or belting. newbie realization! So.... This is where I am now. I am using a 7-8 oz italian shoulder in cognac purchased from Napa Hide House. I believe this is basically a veg-tan shoulder with a a thin burgundy wax finish. The leather is very stiff and lacks the character of the oil tanned leather I was using previously. So in an effort to add some character and some suppleness I asked the people at my local Tandy store in Hayward, Ca what might be the way to go. I thought some lexol or some nice conditioner would do it but they said this wouldn't really do much and recommended soaking in pure neatsfoot oil. So I did! I purchases a gallon of neatsfoot oil, prepared an oil bath and soaked my straps. After the first batch I did learn that for even penetration I would need to orbital sand the back of the leather with 60 grit to remove whatever was keeping the oil from penetrating. Ok! the leather looks good, nice and rich and dark, some nice character, supple.....but not ready to go. The leather is now quite oilly. After drying in the sun, even baking in the oven at 150 degrees, doing whatever I could think of to dry or remove excess oil, the leather is still "bleeding". It is my understanding that it is not good to be selling furniture with oily leather that will be touching clothing. Here is the Question! After soaking the shoulder in neatsfoot oil, how can I remove excess oil as well as seal the leather so that the oil does no stain clothing? Also, please let me know if you have any ideas concerning any part my process as I am a complete leather newbie just trying to figure things out Thank You!
  8. My first shoulder holster. Customer seemed real pleased. As always would do a few things different.
  9. Here is a set of Leather Shoulder Spaulders i am making. The starps are drying should ghave them on by tonight or tomorrow morning. I textured it to look somewhat like lizard skin, not bad i think for first attempt. Straps
  10. Hello I'm new to this forum and I really could use some help. I'm a seamstress and of course right now is busy season what with all the costume requests. I really need help finding a pattern for a shoulder holster. I have included two pictures showing the front and back. It has a pistol holster and two ammo holsters. If any one can help I would very grateful.
  11. Hey everyone, been lurking around here for a bit as I wade into the world of leather but I need some help. Judging by the search results I am not the only one who would like to try their hand at making a sort of Saddleback Leather inspired briefcase. I've been researching techniques for constructing it and composing a tools and materials needed list. One of the big issues I am having is that I don't know what kind of leather to buy. I think I am right in saying I want something veg-tanned so that I can dye (stain?) it whatever shade of brown I decide on, and something around the weight of 5-6 oz. so that it is strong enough. Using the picture from Saddleback below as reference, when I'm sketching out my pattern I have two pieces that are 12.5" x 17" as the front and middle-divider panels; a piece that is (12.5" + a lot more that I have not yet determined) x 17" to serve as the back panel and flap that goes over the front; and two more pieces which I believe I am correct in calling gussets that are I think 2.5" x 42" that attach the panels to each other and serve as the sides and bottom; as well as a few more like the little doodads all over it and the shoulder strap. I'm looking at Tandy and the Springfield Leather Co. sites to determine what kind and how much leather to buy but I don't know what pieces to get in regards to a single shoulder, a double shoulder, a side, a bend, a belly. For example, the shoulder strap is just a few inches thin but very long whereas the back panel is fairly large in both dimensions; I have no concept of how long and wide a shoulder might be versus how long and wide a belly might be so I don't know which pieces to buy for each part of my project. Can anyone help me or point me in the direction of some good resources for this? I want to make sure I can actually use the leather I buy so that I don't end up getting X square feet of leather and come to find that none of it is wide or long enough to cut out a certain piece that I need.
  12. So I'm a novice leatherworker, son of a pro who's been doing it for years and actually owns his own leather working business. I just recently purchased a Metro Arms American Classic II 1911 45.Cal, and absolutely HATE the cheap bulldog harness I bought for it. So I decided to dive in head first into making my own holster. I mainly open carry, but wanted something that would be prime for concealed carry when I do decide to get my CWP. The holster wont be finished and attatched until tomorrow, but I still wanted to share the harness =). Let me know what you guys think! I apologize for the poor quality photos.
