  5. Hello, I seldom make holsters with thumbreaks, but as I've been working on designs for a few shoulder holsters, have had to incorporate them in those designs. For most striker fired guns, it's not a problem, but for a 1911 (and in particular, a Springfield EMP) it's been difficult; I find the snap mounted to the thumbreak (the part the thumb actuates, as opposed to the strap side which wraps around the gun) is landing right *on* the safety lever. This causes snapping the break in place to occasionally push the safety to the 'off' position, which is obviously not acceptable. I"m wondering if anyone would be able to share where the snap side of their breaks (especially in shoulder holsters) is generally placed, and a photo would be most appreciated, if anyone has one handy. Thanks, Larry
  6. I recently purchase the Gold Star heavy duty table press for doing snaps, grommets, etc. It was a press that has been recommended on this site. I am curious if anyone else has had issues w/ this press? I received the first press, along w/ the die set for the line #20 snaps. When I got them I noticed that the dies do not seem to line up properly..especially the dies for the domed portion of the snap. I contacted the company and they sent me a new press. The new press doesn't seem to be much better. The bottom part of the snaps seems to set fairly decently, but the top portion of the snaps I am having an issue with. It looks to me like the die that sets the inside ring snap does not line up properly w/ the leg of the snap. I just tried to set a snap in some 2/3 oz embossed cowhide and I had 4 snaps fail. I have attached a side view picture of the die set for the domed portion of the snap. I didn't include the inside ring on the top of the die so that you can see how it does not line up properly. I am curious if I just got two bad presses or if this is what to expect on a low priced press/die set? Here is a picture of a "good" snap after it is set and you can see it doesn't roll uniformly.
  7. So I have a friend visiting and I need to figure out something I can make quickly that is still nice that she'll like. I come up with the idea of a small clutch or coin purse in the shape of a cat's face. I look around on the internet a bit for ideas and am not really seeing anything, so I do a few sketches and land on this one. Actually the sketch wound up being a frankenstein-like cat purse, but it seemed that everything was fighting me so I went simpler. For one thing, I couldn't find any rivets that were short enough for only one layer of leather. I'm not thrilled about the giant snap in the middle of the forehead, especially without the small rivets along the top to distract from it, but at least it's dark so it's not too noticeable from a distance. The lacing was another thing that gave me fits. I had gotten some of it completed when the lacing snapped, it was simply too old and had become brittle. I had already poked slits all around the edge though, so what can I do but lace? So I grab one of my longer pieces of Horween, a straight edge ruler, and a rotary cutter and try to make a consistent piece of lace and am moderately successful. It's much too thick to pull through the lacing slots though, and I'm not confident of my ability to skive the entire thing down. So I punch holes where the slits are and get lacing. You know something about thicker lace? It takes up more material. I was THREE HOLES SHORT. In retrospect, I probably could have pounded the lace to flatten it out more and add length before I started lacing, but hindsight and all that. So I cut a little more lace and splice it in. I think it turned out alright despite myself. Oh, and I probably should have used contrasting thread for the mouth, but I was really crunched for time at that point so shallow taps with the lacing nail and I called it acceptable.
  8. Thanks to Cseeger I have some awesome coin snaps. This is the first one I've used since I got them so even though it's just a bracelet I'm showing it off. I also did something a bit different with the mystery braid, instead of cutting the strips the entire length of of the strap, I stopped in the middle so it's two braids in one bracelet. I really like how it lays flat against the flat of the wrist when braided this way. I think I'm finally getting the hang of setting snaps, they're firmly attached without denting the hell out of the caps. This is my first time setting rivets and once I figured out the trick of it (and used the proper setter) they were pretty easy to do. I rather like how the "filigree" one looks, I'll probably be pushing that further on the next bracelet I make.
