Hi, Just want to say I have learned so much from this group and I’m really grateful for it. I have a leather handbag start-up. Most of my bags are made with lizard (some with snake and alligator tail). Do you have any exotic skin suppliers internationally or in the States? I have found some in Asia for significantly less but they don’t have CITES documentation. In the states, I’m familiar with Roje, Panam, Columbia Impex. Love their skins I’m just trying to find something a little lower— I understand why the price is higher. I thought about buying bleached skins and dyeing myself but that seems tricky! Any suggestions would be much appreciated Thank you!

Hello, for anyone with knowledge on finishes and where to find them, I’m looking for neat lac or clear lac. I have called Tandy and they do not supply, neither does spring field leather. I’m woundering if I have to order wyosheen but apparently some people don’t recommend using it. There must be a neat lac supplier still selling if anyone has any updates thank you much appreciated. ben N

The last comments I can find are from 2009, and a quick search gets me a few companies, Holster Smith.com, etc. Does anyone have a favorite budget gun blank to recommend? Has anyone used Cook's Gun Molds? How is the fit? Thanks

Hello, I'm trying to find 104 tubular rivets in the UK, ones that are similar to the rivets from weaver leather supply. I need them in brass and stainless steel but have had no luck so far, if anyone could point me in the right direction that would be great! Thank you for the help

Greetings, my name is Randall Smith and I am fairly new to the leather game. I am currently specializing in making high quality and long lasting belts. I've been hand tooling leather belts with 8-10oz Tandy Leather Hides and recently tried an 8-10oz Wickett and Craig tooling side. It seems to me that 8-10oz leather is not thick enough to be durable for a long period of time. I am wondering what leather and thickness you use in order to make the longest lasting tooled belts. I thought about buying skirting because it's typically thicker, but I'm worried that skirting sides wont be as clean. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Additionally, I have been making english bridle belts with Wickett and Craigs leather in 10-12oz. I am wondering what brand ( Hermann Oak, Wickett and Craig, etc), what style ( Harness, English Bridle, Bridle, Skirting, etc), and what thickness (oz) makes the highest quality and longest lasting belt (In your opinion). Help would be greatly appreciated, I'm trying to make the best!! Randall

I was approached by someone to make a three inch wide drive belt - 140" long. So, I will have to attach two or thee straps end to end to achieve that. The old belt the guy had, had a very specific hinge setup that looked like a row of staples that allowed two straps to be attached end to end and make for a smooth belt. Does anybody know if and where that hardware can be found?? Has anybody made this type of drive belt? Johan

Hello all, I just moved to the UK a few months ago and I want to know if you can recommend some leather suppliers where I can buy leather from. I ordered some leather from www.aacrack.co.uk, but maybe there are other places you order from. Maybe some tanneries around UK? I see a lot of leatherworkers using Japanese brass accessories, and really emphasizing that that is what they are using. What makes said hardware so superior and sought after? I came across Smoky Sumi's online store, and they have quite a selection of Japanese brass. Does anyone have any other sources? Thanks, Stephen

I am just starting out with leather. Last week I went to S C Hall in Partridge Green, West Sussex to buy some leather, I bought a natural veg tan side, tan coloured shoulders and some practice leather. They had a great selection (minimum order of 1 skin) and were so helpful. All different types of hides and skins at good prices. They do not sell online as such, but would be willing to send out a sample or two. The company was previously based in Bermondsey, London so is relatively new to Sussex. Thought I would post this as the company doesn't appear easily in an internet search. NB I am not affiliated in any way, just a happy customer!

I am a huge fan of buckle guy, but I am looking for some more suppliers that offer similar quality/style without minimums. I am specifically looking for some sleek/minimal looking solid brass center bar buckles. It would also need to be a situation where I could continue to buy stock in the future, so I don't think anything on eBay or amazon would be a good choice (unless you know more than I do). Ive checked out buckleguy, OTB, leatherguy, leathersmith, weaver, zack white, tandy, springfield, brettuns... Maybe overseas? I don't know. Thanks! Zayne

Hello, So, I've been wanting to SEE a good comparison between Hermann Oak and Wickett & Craig, there is a lot of people somewhat DESCRIBING the differences (or lack thereof), but I have not found anyone having actually documented it with photos/video. So, I received some swatches from W&C the other day, and decided I'd upload some pictures for reference. I have been only using Grade A Hermann Oak (yes, true Grade A). I was excited to hear that Wickett & Craig's tooling leather is lighter in color, and that they have no minimums straight from the tannery! I have to say, though; I am a little concerned with the flesh side quality of the swatch I received. The big thing I've taken away from HO's Grade A tooling leather is that the flesh side is always very tight and the fibers seem to be very short and consistent across the back. I was hoping that would be the case for Wickett & Craig's top grade leather, but the quality isn't quite the same for the flesh side. The flesh side of the W&C tooling swatch seems to be looser, the fibers seem to be a bit longer and inconsistent. Not a HUGE difference, but a difference, nonetheless. Now, I wrote the sales manager regarding the quality, assuming that the swatches that they used were just from scraps and aren't of their "Standard" or "Top grade" quality. The response I received was this: "The flesh will not be a problem Zayne. I'm sure it is just where they clicked the swatch?" Im not exactly sure that means, but I'm assuming it has something to do with them cutting out the swatch with a press, and it just doesn't seem like thats what would have caused the flesh side to be the way that it is. Anyway, have a look at the photos I uploaded. Again, I don't know for sure if the tooling swatch W&C sent me is factually top grade, but the sales manager didn't say that it was or wasn't when I asked him, hence the response. So, I'm assuming that the swatch I was sent IS their top grade, unless one of you can prove me wrong! In one of the pictures, I included the flesh side of the "Oak Skirting" swatch I was sent with all the other swatches from W&C. The flesh side of this one really scares me. It reminds me of the first cheap side of leather I purchased from Tandy. I'm really hoping this isn't W&C's "Standard" quality. Please prove me wrong! P.S.- I am in no way trying to throw shade at Wickett & Craig, I actually do prefer the lighter color of their tooling leather compared to Hermann Oaks. I'm really just looking to provide some information and hopefully gain some insight in return.

Hey guys, I'm looking for a supplier (other than direct from HO, as I can't afford their minimum), that carries Grade A HO backs WITHOUT the moss flesh. I have always purchased through Goliger as they seem to be the only supplier that sells true Grade A HO sides without a minimum, but they only carry the backs with the moss flesh. Well, I guess I should back up a little and say that I have had no experience with their "moss" flesh, and have never seen it, it just doesn't sound like something I would be happy with. With that said, is there someone out there that has purchased said leather with moss flesh, and would kindly post a picture, or at least describe, in detail, what exactly it looks/feels like? Is it like suede? One of the big reasons I like HO is how tight the grain is on the flesh side. Thank you!

I have been looking for a USA manufacturer of belt buckles for some time. There are a few suppliers out there, but very few and hard to find. I'm in the process of getting some quotes and samples from Philip Machine and trying to gauge how much interest there might be in reselling a good share of whatever I buy. I spoke with a gentleman on the phone there today and they typically require a minimum order of around 500 units for solid brass, which can be broken down into multiple finishes, such as brass, nickel plate, antiqued, etc. I have not gotten a proper quote back yet, but I believe they would be somewhere in the $2 range per buckle. I would likely add some markup depending on how much shipping turned into and how long I though I'd be sitting on them. I'm certainly not looking to get rich on this deal, but I do believe in getting paid a little something for taking on the work and the risk... 500 buckles is probably ten years' worth for my operation. If there's enough interest in other folks buying quality USA-made buckles I would list them on my Etsy store as a regular item. I'd love to be able to get quality US items on the market to folks that will use them. So, any thoughts? Anyone? I know other folks are interested in finding domestic suppliers, so it seems like this should be doable. I'm not really interested in trying to do a group buy or form some loose coalition, as those things just seem to stall or fall apart. Better yet, if someone has already found the secret to buying high quality USA made buckles in small quantities at good prices let me know that too!! Otherwise I think I'll be headed down the Philip path one way or another. Thanks! P.S. - Before some helpful soul points me to one of the thousand sources for quality imported hardware: "Thank you," but finding a good US manufacturer is really the point here. I know there are some very good sources for imported hardware (and I've used several of them,) but it's important to my brand development, and to me personally, to try to keep my suppliers American. It's a shame that it's gotten so hard, but it is possible.

Been searching for years and I finally found inlay Iphone cases at Tandy. What I have seen previously is taking a generic Ebay phone case and cutting leather to glue on top. the result of this however is a short-lasting case. Does anyone know of a supplier of the actual case for Iphones besides Tandy? Hi! I was wondering who you guys love to buy your hides from? I'm super happy with my Wickett & Craig English Bridle for handbag straps buy want a buttery soft 2.5-3.5 oz. hide for handbag bodies and clutches. I occasionally use the Tandy Minelli sides but am looking for a larger hide to yield more products. Plus, I think I can find a larger hide at a better price. I own a business so anyone who does wholesale pricing is a plus. If you work with soft garment weight leathers I want to know where you like to purchase it from! Thanks for any feedback!

Hi, I was wondering if somebody could recommend a supplier for english bridle leather in Canada, specifically ontario or at least nearby. I've been able to find a few places out west to order from but the cost of shipping doesn't really make it cost effective. I've also looked at American suppliers nearby but with the American dollar so high it ends up being more expensive than shipping a side from out west. I would be a really big help if somebody could recommend a supplier. Thanks!
