Hello everyone, new member here I'm on the hunt for some lovely dyed-through veg tan leather. I make dog accessories and bags too, so I need something fairly thick. does anyone have their go-to shop for veg tan? it seems to be trickier than I thought it would be.. unless im searching in the wrong area of the internet! Not sure if this topic is in the right place. What I would like to do is to get a moderator to 'Pin It' in the most suitable section in the Forums. When I read posts about almost any subject on here, I seem to spend ages trying to hunt down the easily obtainable equivalents to those mentioned in the post. Even if items are obtainable they tend to be very expensive if UK stocked and dispatched and generally out of the question if sent from the States. There are one or two examples of the reverse problem, I'm thinking of Dixon Tools and Tiger thread which you who live in USA find difficulties with. So what I am hoping for are lists of equivalents, suppliers posting with the items they supply at normal UK post rates and so on. So who wants to start? Claire

Hello, I'm trying to find 104 tubular rivets in the UK, ones that are similar to the rivets from weaver leather supply. I need them in brass and stainless steel but have had no luck so far, if anyone could point me in the right direction that would be great! Thank you for the help

For various complicated reasons we are ceasing to do boot work and so we will be selling our Singer 29K60 machine. This is a long arm treadle model with the "splittable" arm ( there are similar machine out there with a one-piece arm which are virtually impossible to service). It has been drilled to accept a motor at some stage but we have used it as a treadle machine for the last 12 years or so. We are open to reasonable offers or would swap for a Singer 46K49 / Allbrook & Hashfield / Techsew 402 or similar. Posting here before posting anywhere else. This is a very nice, working machine. The table hardware is included but will need a new top making as it is for a short arm machine. By all means contact us for further information.

I am looking into a webshop, and have narrowed my search down to one main supplier, EKM; a UK based company, to be my shop host. Hello all, I just moved to the UK a few months ago and I want to know if you can recommend some leather suppliers where I can buy leather from. I ordered some leather from www.aacrack.co.uk, but maybe there are other places you order from. Maybe some tanneries around UK? This is important to those of us here in the UK or that can visit or travel through the UK but even within North American forum threads I do believe I have seen past reference to information that can be sourced from this totally unparalleled venue. The "heads up" came from an email from Abbey England and the fact that it has concerned them shows this is a matter to be taken seriously. http://abbeyengland.com/Blog/plans-issued-to-relocate-walsall-leather-museum If you have never been there than DO go before it is too late but equally use the petition link provided to try to get the local Council aware that this collection is to the history of leather what the British Museum is to ancient history in general . . and imagine the response if anyone wanted to close the BM and relegate less than 10% of it's artefacts to a side-show? Whoever you are wherever you are if you care about the history of leather being kept public then PLEASE support Abbey and their petition? Thank you.

Hello, I'm looking for a leatherworker based in the UK or who can ship to the UK, to provide an order of all leather bucklers, at least two in the first instance and possibly more. Purple Heart Armoury used to produce an all leather buckler, but have since discontinued them. My club used these for HEMA training, but all of our kit has gone missing and we're now looking to resupply, and Purple Heart Armoury was the only supplier I am aware of, so now we're looking to commission some. A buckler is appromixately 15" diameter circle, with an outward facing "boss" as shown in the image, which covers a hand grip hole in the main face of the shield across which a grip is attached. In the pieces we had from PHA this was entirely made of leather, including the grip, but was solid and sturdy (we used them for sparring and they held up perfectly well to solid strikes from wooden training weapons) The leather construction was perfect for us as it allowed for controlled contact in our sparring, which is not very practical with the more readily available wood and steel or hard plastic varieties. So, what we're looking for is basically a 15" disc with a central cutout, boss and grip, for training purposes. The leather must be stiff and solid enough for moderate contact martial arts practice. The grip doesn't have to be leather but it seemed to work well on the ones we had. From memory there was stitching around the rim so I assume the main shield portion was constructed of layers of leather. The key is that the central convex boss section was solid but not hard, so the buckler could be used to strike at the head and body so long as the strikes are pulled, without the risk of serious injury as would be the case with wood or steel. Hi, I'm looking to try my hand at a bit of leatherworking, and most of the supplies I've found on the internet so far are from America. This has made me curious about what suppliers there are for tools and leather in the UK (where I live), and where different leatherworkers on this side of the Atlantic like to source their stuff from. Also, is there a sort of British equivalent of Tandy whose tools are a decent (and not too pricey) choice for someone starting out? Thanks a lot!

Hey all, I recently invested a great deal of time and money buying myself an industrial walking foot sewing machine - namely an Adler 167-GK-373 walking foot. However I've found it's not quite what I had in mind for my needs. Hand-stitching is for me. As such I've decided to offer it up to you lovely people, for a good deal off what I've paid for the machine, replacement parts, upgraded motor and time to refurbish and calibrate it all. It's an Adler 167 walking foot, made in West Germany, and has been totally cleaned inside and out. A totally solid machine, consistent stitching, reverse stitching, variable pressure foot. Brilliant machine, just not for me I have also upgraded the motor to a new Servo Motor (JK-563A-1 220V 750W 1 HP SERVO MOTOR WITH NEEDLE POSITION) It also has a new feed dog, needle plate, new feet (which I've polished) and comes with all the needles (5-6 packs), threads, clippers and spare parts from the machine that I've accumulated. I live in Scotland and as such it kind of needs to be collected from me, but I can arrange for a courier at what I suspect is a bit of cost (£100+ I would imagine ish). Price I'm looking for is £1100 ono. Many thanks for looking Gordon

I'm looking for suggestions from some of the European members here om LW. I'm looking to have some clicking dies made (my very first) and I'm looking for some good (foremost) and hopefully fairly prices dies from a European or UK maker. Normally I wouldn't mind buying from the US, where I've heard of some good makers (including Texas Custom Dies), but the exchange rate is terrible, so I'm looking for someone closer to home. I have a maker on hand, where I live, but I would like to get some quotes from different manufacturers, as I'm about to place a very substantial order.

Hi All, I am at the point where I need to make the step from hand stitching to a machine stitch to increase production speed, although I am having a hard time finding suppliers for the machines I am looking at. A lot of topics in this forum are making me lean towards a Cowboy 3200 however the nearest sales partner for Cowboy is in Germany (as far as my research go's!) There seem to be a lot of old industrial machines on ebay but it is hard finding a machine that is specifically designed for stitching leather and the cost of a Cowboy is a lot having never had a go on one before making the purchase, taking in to consideration shipping costs as well. Plus there are so many versions of each Singer or Juki for example on ebay that is hard to know which one would be best and suitable, there are also people selling machines on ebay stating the machine can work with leather but unfortunately not all of these statements are true. Does anyone know of any dealers based in the UK, selling specificly leather designed machines? It would be great to find someone that deals with Singer, Cowboy, Techsew, Cobra and Juki, plus any others that could be recommended. Many thanks, Ross

Does anybody know of any good suppliers in London or the surrounding area? I'm mainly looking for a supply of dyes, finishes, adhesives and maybe some tools. I've been looking in a few hardware shops and shoe repair places (hoping to get some resolene), but the only relevant thing I've found so far is Neatsfoot oil. I've heard about JT Batchelors in Islington which I understand is a very comprehensive supplier, but I'm wondering if there are any others. Thanks

Hi, We have recently lost a supplier of leather key fobs to our small UK hotel and are currently gathering quotes for a new supplier. I'm not sure of the exact figure at the moment, we have 89 rooms and also keep a supply of back ups as our guests regularly leave without them, we would obviously keep in touch as we will always need them. I will attach images of the fobs to give you an idea of what we need, each one has a "H" on one side and the room number on the reverse stitched in. It would be helpful to have some rough figures to match up against quotes we have from calling around local company's. Thank you for your time, Damian

Hi, I'm currently in the process of setting up a small business, retailing, high quality, small leather goods, based in England. The ethos of the brand is to offer high quality, craftsman made items, such as wallets, bags, ipad covers and belts, with a strong emphasis on the quality of the leather and detail of the construction. I'd be interested in talking to experienced leather workers based in the UK, or possibly the EU who would be interested in fabricating goods such as wallets, bags etc. Unfortunately I'm unable to recruit help from my friends in the US or elsewhere in the world at this stage, as sadly the amount of import duty I would be charged, and the associated shipping costs, would make this option cost prohibitive. The style of items I want to focus on are rugged, chunky style wallets, bags etc, with stitch sizes around 4mm - 5mm, so it isn't fine, detailed work so much. Wallets will be bi-fold, simple card cases and 'biker' style, similar to the ones offered on the Japanese market. I will provide leather, pre cut to patterns and thread etc. Stitching will be mainly by hand, though some designs can be machine stitched. The initial volumes would be small, and would probably suit someone who is looking for a second income, though natural, organic growth is expected as the business matures. Payment would be on a 'per piece' basis, and is negotiable. Should this sound of interest, then, please get in touch. -
AND BEFORE YOU START I'LL DOUBLE POST IF IT MAKES ME FEEL BETTER! I just got ripped off. I just got scammed. I ordered a Firewind or Freshwind Circle thingy from USA. Not cheap, but stuff from the States tends to be well made and well designed. The postage was not cheap either. So i get a card in the post saying my parcel is ready to be collected at the Post Office Sorting Office (not a post office, more the sorting centre) and don't forget ID such as credit or debit card and remember even though you need one of these as ID you can't pay using one it has to be cash. So I pick up my little package. I pay £3.20 VAT ($5 or $6 Sales Tax) and , wait for it, a £8 handling charge! ($15!) That is why next time I shall be asking for someone over there to get one for me and send it to me using the strict cost as the customs declaration so I don't get stuck allways. In this country, UK, there is a TV programme called Grumpy Old Men and one called Grumpy Old Women. After today I would walk either audition....... Whinge, Whinge.......

Hello, I am really new to the forum, but this place has been a grt place, to help me start with a leather projects & crafts. after working for while, I decided to buy a machine and I need in terms of recommendations, feedbacks etc., in help buying cylinder arm machine. which is capable of using big thread and needle size to work with Bridle butt leather of 2 to 3 layer of 10 to 13 oz leather. I am considering of buying singer 45k89, with alternative foot. But, i read so many post and articles on this forum about foot marks left on the work piece (veg tan/bridle leathers). I looked around and I kind of made up my mind to go with adler 105-64 needle feed, which I believe can help in reducing the marks on the leather, since its a needle feed and i can grind the grooves on the feed dog! I will be delightful, if member of this forum can help me in deciding, to which cylinder arm machine to go for ? and where can I buy it from. People who are willing to sell their adler 105-45 or any cylinder arm sewing machine within uk, inbox me with price and other details? NB: I am not willing to spend too much, looking somewhere around 400£ to 500£ Any feedback or response will be very much appreciated. Thank you -
