DIY Line Finisher
leatherator posted a topic in Leather MachineryI'm looking into making (or buying, on the off chance that flying pigs are sighted) a line finisher. It's mainly for shoe/boot making. What are the essential features? Looks like a muslin and horsehair wheel would be really useful. Also, a burnishing wheel. A few sanding wheels. What about trimming/cutting wheels? I usually see cordwainers cutting soles by hand. And the tool used for marking stitches on a welt? Is that essential or just nice-to-have? Also, I see some cone-shaped wheels that look like vitrified grinding wheels. What are those for? A shelf seems important. And what other features would you want? What about belt sander wheels vs drums? Seems like the drums would be a lot simpler and the belts would be higher performance. I suspect there will be lots of "just buy one" and "you can pick one up at an auction for cheap" and "DIY is a false economy" thoughts. I don't mean to start a debate about DIY or acutioning or whatever. I'm just trying to understand the basic requirements for a line finisher.
Velict posted a topic in Leather Sewing MachinesHello all! I just bought a yamata FS-388z. It's great for the price! I didn't need any sort of "enthusiast" class machine, and this is perfectly fine. I was wondering about the modifications that can be done to it, though. I heard that the sailrite ls-1 was a clone of the fs-288. What about the 388z, and it's clone? I wanted to purchase a monster II clutch, and some other feet. What information do you guys have about compatible upgrades with the fs-388z? I'm looking for feet, dogs, clutch, motor, anything else you can think of. Thank you in advance!
Help! Scratches Sewing
Greta posted a topic in Leather Sewing MachinesI bought an old secondhand leather sewing machine (an Adler 169) and all's right except the marks that makes the pressing foot: it's a little wheel with a graven impressed (I think it's for pull the leather better) BUT this leaves marks on the leather. If I got down the pressure doesn't sew good because not drag the work. The problem: The guilty: That only happen significantly in cow leather, but is the one I want to sew. There's any trick to avoid it? Or you know if a teflon wheel exist? Or something to do after in the leather to eliminate or dissimulate? Please, any idea will help! Thanks a lot!! Greta
