Edge Beveler

Recommended Posts

There was a short video I saw the other day . . . a Brit . . . he made belts . . . and had a rather interesting looking beveling tool.

The thing had a wooden handle . . . and about 8 or 10 inches of metal came out from it . . . had a separation almost like antennae . . . and did a beautiful job of rounding the edge of that belt.

Just wondering if anyone on here knows where I could pick one up.

May God bless,

Dwight

Could you tell us a bit more of the video so we can look at it?

I looked thru the comments on this video...it appears to be a Joseph Dixon edge beveler (size 2 or 3). Sadly, that maker seems to be out of business now. Likely could find some on Ebay or another specialty tool collector elsewhere. Hope that helps...

I believe that is a Dixon edger.  They have a longer shank than most others.

He's using a common edge shave.  Probably a Dixon https://www.tooltique.co.uk/shop/vintage-t-dixon-son-shoemakers-leatherworking-edge-shave/

Abbey England sells a similar style with a shorter shank https://www.abbeyengland.com/workshop-materials/tools/

Harry Rogers uses a lot of old/traditional/secondhand tools, and that edger looks like a traditional English style, probably Dixons, which are no longer made. In fact that style doesn't seem to be made by any current manufacturer, the closest I can find is by George Barnsley

https://www.georgebarnsleyandsons.co.uk/product-page/edge-beveller

I think that style was also made by Vergez - Blanchard, but they, too, seem to have been discontinued. All I can suggest is that you Search around and see what comes up. I don't know many suppliers in the USA but Rocky Mountains Leather supply look like they would have something decent

Or Search for 'Etsy - leather edge bevelers' There are usually loads to choose from, and you might see something you fancy

Thats a Hollow edge shave i use them a lot i have old Dixons but did not have size One and two so got them from Abbey i believe they are made by a former employee of Dixons they work as well as my old Dixons, here are a couple of links if you are interested.

https://www.abbeyengland.com/economy-hollow-edge-shave-fs072

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/232937597891?hash=item363c29abc3:g:U2UAAOSwnRZbpopW I think these too are made by a former Dixon employee.

The listing of George Barnsley site of what a Hollow edge shave is seems to be confused with a hollow skirt shave/french edger and one is definitely not a hollow edge shave. correct me if i am wrong.

Is it just me but using a steel hammer on leather punches is all wrong a mushroomed leather punch is a misused leather punch i have never ever felt the need to use a steel hammer on my any of my leather punches.

Hope this helps

Thanks all . . .

Now to just figure out what to do . . . sure wish Dixon had not gone out . . .

Might just toss my hat in that ring . . . see if I can just make one for myself . . .

May God bless,

Dwight
