Glazing is usually an intentional process done to seal the leather... Alot of exotics are glazed.

More likely is that at some point that leather was placed on a surface that had something on it that transfered to the leather and acted similar to a glaze or sealer.

Yeah this particular side of veg-tan leather the wallet back was cut from, had 1 area that was really shiny, almost reflective so to speak.  

So maybe at some point is was laid on something that caused it.

I still think you had something on your hands. You were eating chips, applying ointment or something. It's inside the panel but outside the carving. No way a random drip/spill/smear was that precise on both sides.

Or, maybe something on the tool you backgrounded with.
