What I've learned about applying dyes

Recommended Posts

:soapbox:

Even if i'm a newbie in leatherwork, i would like to share a tip with you.

When i'm dying a piece of leather, and wish to have a even coat of dye all over, here's what i discover.

First, i'm cleaning the leather with Fiebing's deglazer, then, i'm using the black foam like brush. I'm not fully fluent in english, so, i'll attach a pic of the brush i am talking of.

I dip my dauber in the dye container, then apply a ligth coat ont the foam brush.

Then, i drag the brush in a long stroke. When most of the dye is out of the brush, i recoat the brush with the dauber.

So far, i have only try this technique with Fiebing's light brown Oil dye, but it give me a uniform finish.

I'll try to post a pic of the piece of leather that i dyed this week-end (using my girl friend cam).

Until then, take a look at the brush and experiment with different kind of dye.287961_front200.jpg
