Hi guys…recently got back into making my hand made leather tankards after about 20 years….trying to find a quicker and easier way of lining the tankards primarily…looking forward to chatting and learning more about leatherwork here on the forum.

just thought I would add a couple of pics of my hand made tankards, just gotta clean up the base of these tankards, and they are done. hope u like them.🙂

Nice work. They look great. What do you typically use to line them with?

Very nice tankards.  I used to make tankards but not the authentic looking ones like yours.  I soaked them in a chip fryer with hot bees wax.  When cool and buffed I would use some masking tape around the top edge and pour brewers pitch (bitumen type) into it and move it around until coated and pout out.  Is that what you do or do you mix anything with your bitumen/pitch?

Do you make your own patters or are they available somewhere?

I use a food and alcohol safe epoxy resin with a bit of mica powder to colour the resin black….i use a thixotropic powder to thicken the resin but it has to be “peanut butter” thick to counter gravity…if it is not thick enough, the resin will just sink to the bottom…this can cause problems mixing the resin thoroughly due to the thickness needed, so the finish  can have a grey/ black look sometimes. Once I mix it as thoroughly as poss( with a cordless resin mixer), I paint it onto the inside of the tankard with an long, angled head paintbrush…works very well…I dont mix too much at a time so I can get as many tankards lined while the resin is still workable…i use pure acetone to clean the brush, works very well….i have never used brewers pitch, but it would be more traditional….if there is a better, quicker, easier and less messy way of doing it, I would love to hear your feedback.🙂👍

No, i just place a piece of lightweight leather around the former that I would use, to get an idea of the length of leather I need to cut which will include the handle..the length of leather I use is about 18” x 7”…my tankards are 7” high, and the cup diameter is about 3.4”.
