I wanted to share a resource that might be helpful for anyone trying to figure out the business side of leatherwork.

For several years now, Odin Clack and I have been teaching a handful of business and marketing classes at the leather trade shows. We've had a lot of good feedback, and there seems to be a growing interest in those kinds of insights.

Last year, we started up a podcast called Beyond the Workbench to keep those conversations year-round. It’s not really about “get rich quick” or big marketing tactics, but rather practical conversations with makers about what has worked for them and what hasn't. We've been fortunate to have had quite a few solid guests on to the show to join us and share their perspective as well.

Topics are often around how to think through what you want your business to be, what you’re actually trying to sell, how to figure out if something is working, and how to build something that lasts without burning yourself out.

A lot of it comes from real conversations around mistakes we’ve made, things that worked, and things we’re still figuring out. We try to keep it grounded and useful, especially for makers who care more about the craft than becoming full-time marketers.

Figured I'd share the resource here in case anyone was interested.

For those killing time at their bench and looking for other leatherworking podcasts, I've been compiling a list as a resource on LearnLeathercraft.com. Check out this list of leathercraft podcasts, YouTube channels, and live streams, and let me know what I'm missing.

I second this. I’ve listened to all of them and I look forward to when a new episode comes out. You guys are doing great work with these shows!

There have been a number of serious leather workers that have been on and it’s fantastic to hear their side and perspective of things.

I only wish they were longer than 40 minutes since DFW traffic will take me about an hour and 30 mins to get anywhere in the morning or afternoon!!
