I just got a Chinese Leather Shoe Patcher. I have never used a machine to sew (I've done some repair work with an awl- enough to get me by), but the mechanics of the unit seems pretty simple and the issues of fit an finish can be addressed easily. I do however have a few questions- I have tried finding answers but haven't yet found what I am looking for. Maybe my ignorance is so great I don't know what to ask- but I'm willing to learn.

I want to be able to make repairs to my leather work boots, stitch up saddle leather, make a belt, wallet ect.... so, mat'l thickness will run between 1/8 and maybe a bit over 1/4 inch thick. (I am guessing at one needle thread combo for lighter leather, one for heavier?)

What type of thread, type (size?) needle, brand would be appropriate for for my purpose (this is where I am totally ignorant, sizes, materials, number systems) I went to a local supply house and I got blank stares in response to my questions followed by "Needles and thread are in aisle D, good luck". (Suggestions on who to order from, I would like quality materials, please?)

Also-  what the heck do you do with the loose ends of threads from the very first stitch? (see how deep my ignorance runs!) I have seen back stitching on the finish side, but nothing for the loose thread at the start?

Thank you

Stich-It

I use Tex 90 or Tex 135  and a 135 needle. i think that is the largest needle and thread you can get for that machine. It will look small on belts, holsters, and such. good on wallets, shoes, and small stuff.

I buy from the thread exchange online.

Oh, and back stitch the beginning the same as the end.

Use some good lithium grease on the roller bearing tracks and wear points.

You will probably have to raise the needle bar about 5mm to get the system 135 x 16 needles to work properly in the "Tinkers Delight" so it picks up the bobbin thread.

There have been quite a few posts on here about these little sewers, lots of youtube videos and I think a forum (or two?) devoted to them. Generally, to get the best out of them they need to be gone over to smooth out rough castings and improve the fit and finish. They have a small bobbin so you will be limited in trying to do long stitch runs. The foot is vicious and will mark leather. These were made for street vendors in Asia who do quick repairs so are pretty basic, but that being said they are an interesting little machine.

Mine came setup to use standard domestic sewing machine needles.

Machines wot I have - Singer 51W59; Singer 331K4; Seiko STH-8BLD; Pfaff 335; CB4500.

I plan on tearing this down and going through it thoroughly- that's easy work on my end... and something I am looking forward to. Grease here, oil there, polish this and grind that...

I have watched a few videos, read on the forums some too, but most everything requires more knowledge than I have on the sewing end.

Thread sizes, needle sizes, numbering systems, nomenclature ect... is beyond me. Thats where I need help to just get going.

I was wondering about the small bobbin issue and was curious is there is a way to feed a second spool into the bottom instead?

anyway, I really appreciate the input
