Members Haellyn Posted May 5 Members Report Posted May 5 One of my local libraries got a leather kit (pretty sure it was donated) and we're not sure what one of the included tools is. It doesn't have a cutting edge, so we know it isn't a seam ripper or thread cutter. Anyone know? Thanks! Quote
CFM chuck123wapati Posted May 5 CFM Report Posted May 5 (edited) It will come to me in a few; I've seen them, but it's not for leather work. All the ones I've seen had a T-handle, but that's the business end. Moderator bruce johnson Posted May 5 Moderator Report Posted May 5 It could have been used as a leather tool as well but the eye is broken. They were also used by saddle makers and baseball repairmen as lace pullers to pull the tag end of lace through braid work or punched holes. The leather version has longer shank usually but I I have seen shops using the tire plug tools, especially the T handle for tight holes. Members Haellyn Posted May 5 Author Members Report Posted May 5 Yeah, I thought it looked like a piece of the metal had sheared off. Glad to know I'm not entirely crazy on that. Quote
CFM chuck123wapati Posted May 5 CFM Report Posted May 5 (edited) What Bruce is talking about is this, the other tool is made to push a piece of doped up rope into a hole in a tire, then twisted and pulled out; that is why the notch on the tip end. Members TonyV Posted May 5 Members Report Posted May 5 It could also be a rug tying hook. Put a piece of yarn through the hole in the hook, then run the hook through the woven fabric and tie it off. Repeat many times until you have a pile rug. The notch is there intentionally to ease the insertion and removal of the rope/yarn in both instances of rug hook and tire patch hook. Quote
Members dikman Posted May 5 Members Report Posted May 5 I tend to agree with Tony, push the yarn through and when you pull back it slides out of the slot. I don't think the end is broken, just made that way. Quote Machines wot I have - Singer 51W59; Singer 331K4; Seiko STH-8BLD; Pfaff 335; CB4500. Chinese shoe patcher; Singer 201K (old hand crank)
