Members JomanB Posted July 30 Members Report Posted July 30 I'm working on a field bag, using 4oz chrome-tanned leather provided by client. It's thinner than what I'm accustomed to working with for 2.5in straps but will actually work well with the friction hardware provided. What advice can y'all provide around how I might finish the edges of this leather? It seems too thin and soft to burnish and I'm not stitching it as my machine is down. Any other edging ideas for this chrome-tanned, 4oz product? Thanks so much - jB Quote
alfredleatherworks Posted July 30 Report Posted July 30 If you’re not going to sew, and burnishing isn’t an option (which, with chrome-tan generally it isn’t), then edge paint is the next option most look at. I like to do at least three coats, gently sanding the edges in-between each coat. Basically letting the edge paint fill in the fibers and stiffen the edges, and repeating until it is smooth and glossy. It’s teadious, but if you put in the patient work it can look amazing. Digit Posted July 31 Report Posted July 31 Edge paint is what we use in school. Uniters delivers good quality results, but the process is indeed tedious. The more layers you apply the smoother the result (with light sanding between coats). An alternative could be to roll the edges, but then it's best to stitch too. Quote
