Double Check Your Leather

Was checking the leather I cut for a holster to see if where the stitch line will go will make it too tight, and discovered a split on the flesh side on the back. If it is where the belt loop will go, I might can salvage it by gluing the split and sewing a leather patch under the belt loop. If not, all I can do is use it for straps and such.

I’m about sick about it. It’s making me re-evaluate using cheaper leather vs Herman Oak.

What’s bad is I don’t think I missed the split when cutting out the piece. I’m almost convinced it wasn’t there until I flexed the leather. Almost. Not 100% sure.

At least its on the inside. A big patch glued and maybe sewn on will rescue it. Would you be lining the holster?

I've got in the habit of checking both sides of a hide before cutting pieces out . I usually mark and cut out on the flesh side and I've often had to mark on the flesh side where a flaw is on the hair side to make sure I'll miss it

Unfortunately, the holster is too tight to line. I wanted it to be snug, but unfortunately it turned out to be too snug, which is why I was looking at moving the stitch line. I had taken a leather strip the same weight and measured from the center of the revolver out and increased that slightly for the stitch line, but the strip was more limber and that seems to have made a difference.

Had I stuck with my first pattern, there would have been a piece wrapped around the opening of the holster, and that would have supported the split. Was hoping to do that with an external patch under the belt loop, but the split extends too far out. That, with the tightness of the pattern, has me planning to use the piece for straps and snap covers.

Note: I tried the paper pattern around the revolver first and it was loose enough that the actual leather piece would work.

Have taken the design and made a larger pattern with the stitch line further from the revolver. Made this pattern directly on poster board and that turned out well. Before was doing patterns on thinner paper and gluing that onto poster board.

if its to snug, try adding a welt; sometimes you can rescue a tight holster that way.
