Members DavidBis Posted August 2 Members Report Posted August 2 My son has an elk hide wit painted symbols produced by a Native American. The flesh side is stiffening and uneven. Not sure how to bring it back around. Appreciate thoughts and advice, David Quote

Members TonyV Posted August 3 Members Report Posted August 3 (edited) It's already painted, so your choices are limited. I'm guessing it wasn't very well tanned in the first place. We could get limited improvement by repeating the tanning and stretching process, most particularly the stretching. But doing that now would ruin the paint. You might try lightly applying a bit of neatsfoot oil to the back and let it work its magic and stretch it where it where there is no paint, repeat in a couple months. Note that naturally hand-tanned leather is NOT going to be "even" in any case. if this is just a wall hanging, just forget all that and just hang it on the wall. If it's for a project, use it as is and take advantage of the "rustic" nature of the leather. Edited August 3 by TonyV Quote
