Can’t Set a Line 24 Snap

I’ve set rivets. I’ve set Segma type snaps. I can’t set Line 24.

This is in 9/10 oz leather. First try it looked like the base post extended far enough through the snap. Rotated the flaring tool as I tapped, but it failed to secure the snap. Skived out for the post and tried again. Another failure. Examined both posts and confirmed the are being compressed. Skived out some more, pushed the leather down around the post, and this time gave it a solid hit instead of taps. Failure. Skived out more, pushed the leather down around the post, made sure it extended up through the snap, and rotated the flaring tool as I tapped. Failure again.

At this point I’m at wit’s end and that was a short trip to begin with. What am I doing wrong?

Is you flaring tool correct for the size of the snap? is it giving a good wide flare-out?

I can’t explain your plight however I do understand it about every third snap I can’t get set right hopefully someone can help us both.

It's the one that came with them. How much of the post needs to be through the snap? I thought I had enough, but now don't kniow.

This may or may not work, but a little trick I was taught is to take a Phillips head screw driver. Place the tip of the screwdriver over the end of the post and lightly tap. Just enough to score the metal. Then use your flaring tool.

If you are going to do a number of these over the next couple of years I would suggest getting a lever hand press and dies. You can get them off places like Amazon, Aliexpress, Temu, etc. something like:

The flaring tool supplied is not always the best one or correct one

I usually try for around  3 mm  - 1/8 inch. Too much more and the post flare-out is not tight, not enough and the flare-out is not enuf to grip the snap well allowing it to pull off easily

It might be dual problems, then. Have about 1.5 mm through the snap, and thought the center cone on the flaring tool was kind of small. Had thought about getting a setting tool from a reputable source.

Maybe should skive a little more until I have 3mm through the snap, then try again, and if that fails, try starting it with a Phillips.

If you're trying to go thru a single piece of thick leather I believe you can get 'long post' snaps for that

If its thru two pieces making one thick try attaching the snap thru one layer and covering with the second layer
