New Holster

Hello all! Last night I finished up a holster for my dad - he received a Ruger Single Six .22 revolver from my grandpa when he passed away, and it came with a left-handed leather holster that's probably as old as the revolver itself. We're all right-handed, so I offered to make a holster for it.

I used the California Slim Jim holster tutorial available on this forum, though I didn't line it as I don't have any thin leather on hand.

I'd like to possibly incorporate a retention strap that hooks onto the trigger, similar to this. What would be the best way to attach a strap like this at this point? Anyone have any examples?

Nice job on the holster! Some makers punch two holes in the front of the holster body and use a thong like the one in the picture with a tail that is laced through the two holes and extends out, then it can be pulled down to hold the gun in the holster. I carry my single actions in holsters with the same lines and when molded to the gun they retain the gun very well. I think the only way they would come out is if I walked on my hands. I use one as my back up gun when I hunt and I have slipped and fell and not lost one even in the heavy brush.

My first thought is don't go add a retention strap at this point. If the one pictured is the one you have in mind, make another holster, and incorporate that in the right stage and it will come out looking 100% if you go back and try to "fix" this one, there's a good chance you won't be happy. I might just be pessimistic.

I like the Idea of the lace through two holes, But in my mind it just doesn't match this nice streamlined California Slim.

You have enough surface contact, I doubt you would have any issues with the gun leaving the holster. Unless he rides a horse a lot. IMHO

particle, FWIW, I agree with 1911operator. I wouldn't try to modify your rig. In my experience, the strap is mostly unnecessary with that kind of holster, or most western holsters ...... unless doing an awful lot of time in the saddle.....or are climbing trees., and after-the-fact mods do not generally work out well. Retention should be fine if you molded well ... and it looks as though you did. I will put the first thong I've done in years, on a 'Threeperson' style holster now under construction. This, for two reasons. First, the prevailing thought is that he had one on his original, and second, there isn't a lot of gun (a four inch S&W K-frame) inside the holster what with the totally exposed trigger guard. Mike

Thanks fellas for the responses. I gave the holster to my dad after I made it, and he was very happy with it - I never did bother with going back and adding any sort of retention strap - he was happy with it just the way it is.
