New leather mask....The Warrior"

Recommended Posts

Finished another mask, i have called him the Warrior. Proudly modelled on the head i use for mask molding. I resisted the urge to quick dry in the oven and let him dry overnight!wrr.jpg

Freak, it is only one piece of leather, but i'm not sure what the weight would be...here in australia leather is sold by the thickness. This leather is veg tanned calf skin and is call 1mm. This is about the thinnest leather i can find. Tina, i use a combination of leather dyes and acrylic paints. This mask was black leather dye with a touch of gold added. The red (the photo makes it look pinkish) is an acrylic fabric paint that is luminescent. I use an airbrush to apply then apply a spray of sealer.

cheers

1mm=2-3 oz. nice work Roo, you've got me tempted to have a go at trying a mask

Wow, that's awesome! I love the detailing on the top part. And what a great finish!

Your "head" is also very cool. I have some heads from back when I made hats, but they are just styrofoam, nothing nearly that fancy and life-like.

That's lovely! I looked at your website and all of your masks are wonderful : )

Did it airdry as hard as if you'd dehydrated it in the oven? Just curious.

Hey Roo,

Do you wet, shape and let dry or do you put something else on them to help harden?

I soak in hot tape water until no more bubbles, then shape and dry. the veg tanned leather holds its shape very well after wetting and drying. I have found that the hot water from the tape leaves the leather just a tad harder after drying than using cold water.

I airbrush using acrylic paint and spray a coat of sealer to finish

cheers
