Is It Possible To Case Leather After Dyeing With Pigment Dyes?

Recommended Posts

I just made an item out of heavy vegtan leather and like a dummy I went and dyed it before I wetformed it.

I've never done it like that before, assuming that the inks/dyes would run if I wetformed it after dyeing.

Will it work out OK?:o

Stagdag,

I apologize.....my first response was just my sick attempt at humor, LOL! We would need to know a lot more info to be able to answer your question completely. My guess is, however, that once you have finished molding, you should be able to re-dye the piece if it is necessary. Hope this helps.....

The only problems I've had with dye running during wetforming have been with horsehide.

And neatsfoot oil on cowhide.

I've used Fiebing's leather STAIN with no problems, and will soon be trying their Pro Oil Dye.

Thanks guys, I just took the plunge and did it.

It didn't run, but a lot of the dye rinsed off apparently.

Either way I'm probably gonna beeswax it so I won't matter.

Cheers:)

FWIW, . . . I had several email discussions years ago with Lou Alessi on holsters. His professional process was to cut and then dye them.

It was the second step in his process, . . . and considering that his business made thousands and thousands of holsters, . . . I worked out for him.

I personally don't like to do it that way, . . . but then again, . . . I do a lot of things differently from accepted ways.

May God bless,

Dwight
