Which Leather From J & Fj Barker

Recommended Posts

I will be making some belts soon and just wanted to check which leather I should be buying from J & FJ

Their price list, attached, is quite long

They also told me:

our bridle butts are 60" long by 24" wide, and our backs are about 80" by 24".

Any opinions will be appreciated

What kind of belts are you making? Single layer... double layer? I guess either way, I would go with the bridle butts. You could go with the back cut as well... but the butts are less expensive and plenty long for most of your belt making needs ;)

Butts are big and rectangular. Backs are longer butts, including the shoulders. Bellies are stretchy and not worth using. Shoulders have to be cut sideways, which makes em a bit too stretchy. Butts are what you want, they will make straps about 48" long. Remember they are sold by the pair -- two half butts of about 24x60". That's a lot of belts. You may want to ask if they will mix and match different colours.

Bakers are quite happy to sell butts in ½-pairs (just one butt), and mixing colours is no problem. I often buy 2 x ½-pairs of different colours (and sometimes different finishes) from them.

If you can speak to Andrew Parr, you will find him to be very helpful . . . a true gentleman!

I've only managed to quickly speak to them today, admittedly the lady did say Andrew was best equipped to answer my questions, but the 'Oak Bark Full Grain Bridle Butt's' only come in 2 colours?

I am due a call back from Andrew, unfortunately I didn't get one today, but I was hoping to be able to order from the majority, if not all, of colours listed on their site. Assuming the Oak Bark Full Grain Bridle Butt's are what I want?
