LoyalNine Report post Posted September 18, 2014 I want to make a fire shield for my helmet I use at my Volunteer Dept and have fount that the only fonts that I like are a bit to advanced for me to carve. I would be able to paint the letters on like some of the custom helmet shield makers do but really dont know how to go about doing it. I guess I am trying to figure out the best way to transfer the lettering oulines to the leather to then be painted. Any thoughts on the best way to go about this would be greatly appreciated. The shield is going to be dyed black and the lettering will likely be white with a red outline or shadow. What kind of paints should I use? The acrylic feblings dye I have feels a bit thin but I guess I could make it work. What do I use to transfer the font from printed paper to leather? (I have Photoshop and Aiso I can print it out exactly the way and size I want it if that helps..) Thnaks for the help! Joe
coreysyms Report post Posted September 22, 2014 Ive had really good results with acrylic + fabric medium. Fabric medium helps the paint keep its elasticity. You can find it next to acrylics at Michaels or Hobby Lobby. But since you are doing lettering it will never look right. Make your artwork and take it to an engraver. Most laser engravers can do glass, metal, and even leather since its a small piece. Local guys would likely work with you on that.

devilhide Report post Posted June 1, 2015 I use an alphabet craftaid to transfer my font, works realy well. It's a firm sheet of plastic with a raised font that you can just rub on cased leather to get a good line to cut.

I use fonts from a computer and then print it out on vellum paper and use a ball point stylus and trace over cased leather to transfer the fonts. Then you can take a swivel knife and tool or an exact knife to cut them out for a recessed look or cut them out on another piece of cased leather and stitch for a raised look.
