Preserving A Tail

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

We found a coyote tail on our dog walk last night

It is sheared right off, no bone visible but a small patch of skin at what was the attatchment point

Beautiful grey/white and soft

Was wondering how to preserve this???

Salt and borax is what I read in a taxidermy site, others said salt brine and then tanning solution

Do I need to do anything?? There is not any flesh present

Thanks for any input

Scott

The tail should have a bone and meat in it.

The tail gets pulled from the bone and then is split on the bottom side, tanned and then tacked out to dry.

If the bone is still in it then it will be a little more work trying to get it out now that it's off the animal.

Salt and borax will dry it and preserve it. I've done full hides that way after I fleshed them clean. Got a yote on the garage wall. It's not tanned, just preserved. Usually quite stiff too. If you want tanned you will need some form of tanning solution or brain tan it. Take all the bone, meat, and fat off you see. Tack the hide open. Cover in salt a borax and let it sit a while. It can not sit long enough, but rarely can you let it sit too long.
