Removing Plating

Recommended Posts

Can someone tell me how to remove nickle plating off of -D-rings and buckles? I want to get back to the raw steel material. I don't have access to electrolysis equipment but do have access to lots of different chemicals I could use.

The only way is to sand or grind it off.It would probably be easier to make your own.

The equipment to do it by reverse plating isn't that hard to come by.

A rock tumbler will also do it, but that will take awhile.

Nitric acid. I used it to remove nickel plating from brass. You might have a problem with the steel underneath reacting with the acid. Don't ask me where to get it. We use it at work for passivating stainless steel.

I wonder if citric acid would work, that is also used for passivating stainless..

Worth a try. Citric acid sounds friendlier than the nitric I used.

Computer Board Etchant Solution sold at radioshack will strip nickel plating. I have only used it to age/ relic before, so I don't know what the bare metal would look like if you left it in there long enough to strip all the nickel off. Its about 8$ a bottle.
