billium Report post Posted May 11, 2015 I have been visiting craft breweries with a leather growler holder that I designed and getting approached by the brewmaster about where they could get one. Some of the brewmasters even asked for some to sell on consignment or to design with their company logo. I made a few more leather growler holders but found the process too time consuming as I do have a day job! So I put up the pattern for sale on Etsy (Leather Growler Holder on Etsy (link)). Do think this is a good idea? veedub3 Report post Posted May 11, 2015 Growler carriers are a good seller for me. I purchase the growler and just worked with it until I got a great fit and a design I was happy with. Tandy sells their growler pattern for $1.99 but if you can get $9.99 for yours go for it, why not! Karina do you have a link? i found my handle design works great for pouring and carrying the growler around like a briefcase! the core is made of 3 pieces thick veg tan. the top cone was also a tricky piece to get correct. I do like it when people like Ian Atkinson (Leodis Leather) and George Hurst (Tandy Leather) provide a video, but the Tandy video subscription costs $9.99 per month I think your design is more complex than the Tandy pattern, and personally I would have left the price where it was to see if there was any interest before dropping the price on it. That top part going across the growler was a PITA for me to get just right. I think Tandy just has a regular strip of leather going across, so I think the higher price would have been justified. If you had no sales, then I would consider reducing the price on it. When I started a few years back, I actually purchased the video subscription from Tandy. I found it to be a waste of money because of the many free videos on Youtube that show the same thing, As of late it seems that someone at Tandy is watching the market, it seems as soon as a popular item turns up, they create a video for it, when 2 to 3 years ago, the videos was a bunch of old timey stuff that no one wanted to make much less buy. At least not the younger generation anyway. JMO. Also I do not have a link to show mine, but I will post a few pictures as soon as I get a free moment. Aflian Report post Posted May 24, 2015 I am brand new to leatherwork and most of the skills used for leatherwork in general. I am however a big fan of beer. In my city we've got about 8 breweries located off of the city bike trail. I came across this a few days ago and I've been researching leatherwork and finally committed and made an account on this site. I'd like to make this one of my projects to begin around the house in my free time as it would make carrying my growlers so much easy on the bike! I've even made an etsy account to get your template! Before I got started though I was hoping to find out if there were any advanced skills needed to make the carrier. Like I said, I'm brand new so I'd like to practice the more difficult parts before trying to complete the full project. I get a perfectionist complex whenever making something people will see in public! I read somewhere, I think on Etsy, that this was a great project for amateur to skilled leatherworkers. Is there a few projects I should be working on before even attempting this one? I feel like amateur would be giving myself too much credit! Thanks in advance, I'm a big fan of the piece. I just added a new pattern to my Etsy site for an axe head cover with belt loop. willspatterns.etsy.com New member Aflian, I really liked your post. I'm also a huge fan of beer, and biking to breweries sounds awesome. That was part of my inspiration for making the growler pattern. In response to your post, I think the growler is a great first project, and it shouldn't be too difficult. The pattern includes full instructions and templates. It's mostly just trace and cut 4mm thick leather and use the template to mark rivets and snaps. Making stitching holes and hand-sewing gets better with practice. The optional handle is probably the hardest part because you have to wet-mold thinner vegetable-tanned leather around a core. And I think we all totally get your "perfectionist complex" when you share your leather project with someone in public! If you really want to start on something smaller I just posted the above axe-head cover on my Etsy site which is easier. There are also some really nice patterns on this forum. Sven WillIBeFamous Report post Posted August 17, 2016 Hi, I picked up your Growler pattern yesterday as a few friends are asking for me to make one for them and I'm looking forward to getting to grips with this. A couple of questions though: In the PDF that I originally downloaded it says that there will be some detailed instructions to follow, but I haven't had these sent to me. You also say that you use a Ladder stitch, but I've never seen this done before so wondering if you can point me in the right direction, or if the detailed instructions will include this?
