Fire Helmet devices

Here's some of my latest pieces. I'm pretty new to leather work, so any constructive criticism or advice is welcome.

 

Here's a couple helmet devices I made for some friends on the local FD. They are 2 ply 8oz, stitched together for rigidity.

Looks good!!!   What did you use for finishing/sealing?

Thank you Chicago Screech. I used Fiebings USMC black dye, Angelus paints and Super Sheen. There is adhesive backed velcro stitched to the backs to attach them to the helmet. I probably should have added a drop of yellow or brown to the white, it comes out very bright once you get it to cover.

Always interested in what others use. Awhile ago I ran into someone who makes a lot of shields and he likes using leather balm with atom wax for finish. Shields tend to be under harsher conditions then normal leather items and he found the atom wax to hold up really well. They do have fire proofing stuff, but expensive and no self respecting fireman wants their shield looking new forever... LOL

I agree, it's definitely good to hear what other folks are doing. I'm really new to this and there seems to be many different ideas/ products on finishes. I forgot to add, the shields also got a good coating of mink oil before they left.
