Simple question about veg tan leather

Recommended Posts

Hi, does finished veg tan leather ( with sheen, carnauba cream etc) will darken to give a brownish patina?

I wanna make veg tan purse, but I want em to be waterproof so I have to add a finish. Just wondering if it ll age nicely !

Thanks!

Anything will darken veg tan. You can put it in sunlight and tan it just like human skin. Resoline has a uv blocker though. As to looking nice its all in the eye of the beholder as they say.lol

If you want to make water proof purses, . . . try vinyl, . . . PVC, . . . or other plastics.

Leather can be made water resistant, . . . but you will be fooling yourself and your customers if you advertise "water proof" purses.

Resolene is a very good product for that, . . . as well as a combination of beeswax and neatsfoot oil.

May God bless,

Dwight

I recently made a mix of neatsfoot oil and beeswax, as Dwight mentioned, it seems to make leather very water resistant, but needs to be warmed to soak in all the way. Otherwise it will be sticky. I started with just a little beeswax but be warned it is very overpowering to the neatsfoot oil.  I kept having to add more oil to make it less waxy.  I think it darkens leather some.  But seems to be a good finish.
