Members Rick54 Posted March 29, 2017 Members Report Posted March 29, 2017 I see the Amy Roke pricking irons come in 2.7mm (#10), 3.0mm (#9) and 3.38mm (#8) sizes. Could someone please explain the need for three different sizes, and what is the determining factor for purchasing any one particular size? Is there an all around preferred size? Thank you! Quote
bikermutt07 Posted March 29, 2017 Report Posted March 29, 2017 I'm no expert but I have been playing with the different size chisels lately. The 3mm is really small like .4 mm thread. I think 3mm is 9 stitches per inch (could be wrong). The 3.38 looks good with .6mm thread. 3.85 or 4mm look good with .8mm thread. 5mm looks good with 1.0mm thread. These are all recent tests and only my opinion. That being said I have a set of 4mm co link chisels from Amazon that I have been using for over a year. For smallish to medium size goods I think it fits nicely. I toy with wallets and other small things. I can't imagine ever needing anything smaller than 3mm and I would use it for like watch bands or something. Quote I'm not paying 80 bucks for a belt!!! It's a strip of leather. How hard could it be? 4 years and 3 grand later.... I have a belt I can finally live with. Stitching is like gravy, it's only great if you make it every day. From Texas but in Bossier City, Louisiana.
Members Tugadude Posted March 29, 2017 Members Report Posted March 29, 2017 The difference is in stitches per inch. There are some reviews of the Amy Roke irons on Youtube. One youtuber said the 3.85 would make a good all-around size. Make sure you get a 2 prong to go around corners and a 5 or 8 to do straight runs. I think they do 2, 5, 8 and 12. Quote
