Dragon figure carving

Recommended Posts

Heres an in progress of a dragon I carved and painted in Natalie's class.  Not quite finished, yet.  Colors are all Golden Acrylics.

Love the coloring and shading...

if you can colour your leather like that, do you think you could colour a portrait of a persons face?

something I've been thinking about lately.

I'm certain I could, although it would be much more difficult than a dragon.  Especially if it was someone you know.  But, if you take the time to perfect the colors, its just a matter of technique.  Good carving helps too.

How well does the colouring of painted leather hold up over time? Like say 10 to 20 years?

Well I've only been at it for 4 years, so I can't say from actual experience, but Ive seen painted pieces that are over 20 years old and they still look great.  Acrylic paint is essentially plastic when it dries so its very durable.  The pieces Ive done look exactly the same as they did when I first made them, 1, 2 3 or 4 years later.  Time will tell, I suppose.

Amazing! How did you get the color details so accurate? I would love to be able to do that!

Beautiful! Do you seal the leather before you paint it? That is what I do so I can use washes to get the coloring, and shadowing to look right. However I find the paint is easer to chip sometimes after it is dry. If you do seal it first what sealer do you use? If you don't how do you achieve these colors, and shadows without the leather soaking it up? Sorry for all the questions, but figure carving is my favorite, and you are about the best I have seen, so who better to ask.

Nice, was it all hand brush work? Looks like a little airbrush work was used.

Nice that it's not over hand tooled. I think that is what makes painting these stand out more. Too much tooling can overwhelm the piece. But you didn't so great job.
