Best sewing awl haft

Recommended Posts

I'm looking to purchase a new awl haft.

I have an Osborne #143 & it is fine. Been using it for years.

Recently I purchased Tandy's " pro awl", which broke in 1 month !

The whole metal part comes out when I tighten the blade.

Just like some suggestions on which hafts you all use.

I like trying new & better tools.

What awls do you all use ?

I hope you took it back for a refund or replacement.  I have a wooden handle that I bought from Tandy years ago and it seems to be holding up well with no problems.

Gary, I had that one also from years ago, The metal part broke.

The new one is made out of wood, the black one, and it stripped .

I tried gorilla glue, & it seems to be holding. Tandy makes crap tools now !

You could try a C.S. Osbourne or a Vergez Blanchard. I have the CSO and its working but there have been a few times I was afraid it was going to bend which is to say that it needs some work to get it smooth and passing through leather easily. I don't have a VB due to price. I haven't yet ascended high enough on the skill tree to justify the cost of VB stuff yet but I can only imagine they are the best.

I think it makes sense to pay a little more up front and not have to replace tools after a short time.  I have a lot of woodworking tools and I try to buy the best quality - imhave many power tools that I have been using for 40+ years, so the extra cost doesn't amount to much when you amortize it over the life of the product!

I'm relatively new to all this, but I have been really happy with my Barry King medium awl handle (http://www.barrykingtools.com/handtools.htm).

I get my hafts made by a friend who turns wood that way they fit my hand as many comercial ones are bigger than I like, also they are much cheaper.
