Consew 226 Stitch Selector Not Working

Hi Guys,

I have an older Consew 226 that sews well but the stitch selector is not accurate. I loosened set screw on the selector ring and set it on "5" and I'm getting stitches 5 per inch. Ok great.

Then I go to "10" and get 8 stitches. I select "12" and I get 10 stitches - you get the idea.

Something must be out of adjustment. I have searched but I can't find info on this particular selector type. Can someone point me towards a fix?

With most Japanese machines the stitch settings correspond to the length of each stitch in millimeters, not how many stitches per inch.

If 5 stitches give you about 1" of sewing when set at 5, it seems to be working correctly.

Your stitch selector does work, and likely as well as you can hope for. They're not intended to be mathematically accurate, they're more of a rough guide. Actual stitch length varies with material type and thickness and sometimes even sewing speed.

The simple fix is a little cheat sheet that tells you which number corresponds to which actual stitch length for a given material.

Trying to make that dial accurate for all possible material combinations will be an exercise in futility.

The stitch length adjustment on my 226 is probably the only thing I don't like about it.  Sort of a clunky adjustment mechanism compared to more modern machines with knobs to change stitch length.  Luckily, I just leave it at or near max for the work I do.  

Otherwise the 226 is an elegant and capable machine.

most vintage sewing machines have an un-precise stitch length adjustment. Most lot of them don´t even have the stitch length marked on their dials - if they have a dial at all.
