Heated leather tools for edges

Recommended Posts

Hi Folks

I have little idea on what heated tools like the soldering irons with creasers or edgers do that make them worth buying rather than for instance using the edge paints that are available

Have seen the various hermes and like on youtube and they seem to prefer heat to other means, and always for the line just around the edge

Another question if I may, do heat stamps like company stamps offer better results than casing the leather and usiing normal stamps or is it just a more convenient way for professionals

Regarding your second question, many leathers do not case and accept stamps like vegetable tanned leather does.  So in those instances, heat is the way to add your maker's mark.  So you are actually "branding" the leather.  So whether it is convenient or not, on some leathers, heat is the best option.  Other options would be dye stamps or lasers I suppose.

Regarding the first question, I will leave that to folks that use heated irons such as a fileteuse.  I only paint edges with Edge Kote then burnish and wax.  Works for my purposes, but I'm a hobbyist.  Edge finishing is a process for which there are no shortcuts or "magic elixirs".  When I see good edges, I applaud because I know it requires effort.

It is my understanding that heat helps with crome leather when it comes to forming a fine leather edge.

With creasing you can also use open flame to heat the hand creaser, like a candle or alchocol burner or something like that.
