Looking for suggestions for leather for patches.

I’m looking at making some leather patch hats but I’m not close enough to a leather store to put hands on leather and feel what I want. Anyone have suggestion as what to use? I will be engraving and cutting the leather on a laser machine and sewing them onto hats.

I seem to remember a post where i thought someone stated that Chrome leather can give off poisonous gases when used with a laser, Chrome Leather is often used on Clothing, Furniture and Car upholstery among other items. So that would leave Vegetable Tanned Leather that you could use, but you need to check first as i could be wrong

Can you pop up a picture or drawing of a typical hat you would make?

I had to call my Tandy store, . . . I recall a leather I got from them a couple years ago, . . . 

It's called Milled Vegetable Tanned leather.  Very soft like deerskin or goat skin, . . . seems to be very strong, . . . very pliable, . . . and while it would have to be shallow work, . . . I believe it could be impressed or embossed.

I do all sorts of leather patches and cut them on the clicker and heat emboss them.

The “soul” patches are the look I’m going for. Are they bridle?

This is the style hats I will be making. The patches will be engraved and cut on laser and then sewn on.
