Pre 1963 CRAFTOOL CO. saddle stamps

Recommended Posts

I know it’s a huge 300+ collection but I’d like to complete this entire set.  Searching for the early 3 diget stamps that are in good condition with no chrome plating damage.

This may drive you mad. hehehe.   I have a large set of craftools but the post 1963 mainly with the letter and numbers.  Years ago I bought a whole bunch of stuff together. In that was a couple hundred craftool in a homemade wood block.  All nicely labeled with the letter and number prefix per hole. However many were missing!  I swear anytime I follow an old doodle page or other tutorial I am missing just one stamp it recommends.  So I set out to complete the block.   Ive made a lot of progress but still am missing some.  Along they way I realized there are lots of variants that i may not have as well which weren't labeled in the block   I still hope to fill it out some day.  I also would love to have a full set of the Kelly tool co midas stamps both the discontinued ones and the new set....although cost will likely stop me there.

Good luck with the search I only have a few older ones which I am hanging on too.    I have also found that with in the same number ones they vary some in size too!   So when I buy a lot off ebay I just test the ones out and pick the one I like the best.

Its a fun hunt at least!!

Ross I’m also running into different variants on same number stamps. Like you mentioned, some are slightly smaller or larger. Some have more defined detail so I’ve been keeping those as these make a better crisp stamping.

I’m not in any need to complete the entire collection as I will probably never use some of these stamps. Its just a way to pass time along the journey.  I have been looking on eBay and have noticed small 24-36 piece lots have been selling in the $3-$3.50 range for each stamp. Some reach $4-$4.50 range too.   A few years ago, these same lots were going for $1.50-$2 each stamp. I should have been buying them a few years ago. lol

I’ll keep searching eBay and pick up small lots at a time. Might be the way to go.

Yesterday I purchased this small lot for $175. Out of the 40 stamps I need half of them. I’ll relist what I don’t need to help recoup the cost.

Today I purchased another 53 stamps for $100. I wasn’t able to get a list as to what stamp numbers are included. I’ll see how “just jumping in blindfolded” works out.

Look for the seller yanjieshop on E-Bay. He is in China and has great prices on vintage Craftools. I have ordered from him several times, he ships the next day, and his tool descriptions have been right on. It usually takes about 12 days shipping time, and the shipping is cheaper than U.S. sellers.

Remind me not to buy any craftools on ebay any time soon so I don't bid against you. :)

It’s okay to bid against me. Besides, this past week alone, I’ve noticed new listing everyday under “vintage craftool” or “craftool lot”.

Just when one new listing looks to have a decent assortment of tools and I’m about to bid,  another new listing pops up and has a better assortment of leather tools priced about the same as the previous listing.

I send questions to these sellers: can you post better close up pictures of the stamps? Can you also show the sticking end of each tool? Can you list each stamp number? Are these stamped, Craftool Co., Craftool Co. USA, or just Craftool USA? Are the tools showing signs of chrome flaking or chipping off?

The answer I get is.. Yes, they all say Craftool, bid with confidence, no reserve.

Which is why I’m posting here.

A while back I posted the above thread and There is some more info on stamps etc on there.   Of course a search of leatherworker and you will gain a lot of info to go thru too!

Chris: I would agree there is always new posting on ebay for leather stamps and leather vintage lots etc.   I also have suffered the responses when asked about what stamps they really have in the lot.   I think  a lot of that has to do with resellers who dont know the difference anyway.   They arent leather workers and mainly are just moving product.  Which is fine.   It does make it harder for folks like us looking for specifics.  I know I have a drawer full of doubles and triples from buying off ebay and craigslist.  Least a couple hundred.  One of these days I will get around to listing them.

Course It would be nice to have a full Barry King set or Jeremiah Watt...or Hackbarth etc etc....I best hit the lotto!   Lets not even talk about other hand tools that is a whole other area!

The search continues always!!

Ross
