New from Alabama! *pic heavy*

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone,

I'm currently in Springville/Odenville, but will be moving up near Huntsville soon. I started down this rabbit hole about a month ago after wandering into a Tandy leather looking to learn how to make a knife sheath to go with the knives I forge... Walked out with way more than I thought I was gonna get and now I think I have a problem.

Here is my month progression so far!

Started off with this knife sheath *I didn't make this knife, did make the hammer though...*

Followed by a card wallet

Then I bit the bullet and tried out a wallet

A friend of mine saw my card wallet and asked if he could buy one, so I made him one. This one had a neat scar that came through in the dye very well!

Then another friend wanted to buy a full wallet, so I made him one. This was wallet number 2!

Really love the white and brown!

So did the dog!

Then my wife wanted a bag, so we made this one together:

Then came more wallet requests!

Wallet number three! Starting to notice improvements!

Working improving my edges:

And I just finished up wallet number 4 tonight! I'm really happy with this one and love the natural and black accents. My fit up was way better on this one!

Well, I hope you enjoyed my first month of leather working as much as I did! I'm really enjoying it so far and am super glad I was able to get involved! Also, huge shout out to the super helpful people at the Birmingham Tandy location for being super helpful and informative! If you guys/girls see anything I could do to improve on, or have little tips here and there, please do share! I love learning and embrace the learning curve!

Thanks,

-Josh

Oh, on a side note, if there are any local Huntsville people on here, are there any leather supply places around Huntsville?

With that stack of wallet blanks, it looks like you've found one essential component of attaining proficiency - doing a bunch of similar things in short succession helps one develop the routine and muscle memory before tackling more advanced projects. Well done on the finished stuff - looking good so far!

You've got wicked talent! Looks great, from project one to the most recent! Keep it up!!

If your looking into trying new leather, I recommend www.districtkeathersupply.com they have great selections and you can get small pieces (4x18, 8x18) before going for a full/half hide.

Most important thing is to have fun.

Benny
