How did they do this technique? I want to duplicate it!

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know how the middle of this sheath was tooled?

If so, what tool was used?

I thought about taking a piece of drill rod about an inch long, welding a handle on it to form sort of a long inverted T shape, then using a metal cutting blade or hacksaw cutting slots in it to replicate what I see here.

I just dont know about the different sizes of indentations that are tooled into the leather. Looks like three different sizes of tool were used. Opinions? Were the indentations made with one type of tool and the striations made with something else within the indentations?

All comments solicited and welcomed!

Thanks

Jerry

Looking closely, it seems to me they have used a pear shader with a ribbed texture.

IMG_7823.JPG?format=1000wThis is the type of tool you are looking for. This is either called a “ribbed” “lined” or “horizontal” pear shader.

For tool specifics-

Barry King- Thumbprint: pear shader horizontal medium

https://www.barrykingtools.com/thumbprintsveinersstops.htm

Tandy/Craftool- Tandy does not currently offer a horizontally ribbed pear shader, but there are several discontinued stamps that you can easily find on eBay. Use the tool reference guide to search for the old numbers. https://www.tandyleather.com/media/downloads/CraftoolConversionChart.pdf
