Braided tool handles

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys, here's my first attempt at braiding over a core. I did this just to learn the technique...the underlying handles were perfectly OK. The bigger one is a rounded chisel I use to cut corners, the second s a modelling spoon.

8 strands in both cases. The bigger one was relatively straightforward, once I'd worked out how to start. The smaller one, done with 3mm kangaroo was incredibly fiddly for my big paws!

Very nice, Wish I could do that guess it’s like anything else you just need to take the time to learn how and practice! Anyway it looks fantastic.

It's not overly complicated, but time consuming... Took me a good 2 hours per tool.

Easy for you to say.  I tried this years ago. Several times. Lots of frustration.  I eventually ran out of dirty words and had to stop.  Yours look great.

Two hours per tool? What a great investment! You developed a great skill and got two fine looking pieces to show for it. I really like it.

That is a huge improvement over plain tool handles. I'm going to have to try it one of these days.

Those look great and I'm sure they feel great in the hand.

Many years ago I gave a friend some thick grade waxed cord That wouldn't fit my needles. He was serving in the coast guard at the time and wanted to try his hand at making decorative wound cord handles for knives and such to pass the time aboard ship. The results were amazing, with various zig zag and diamond patterns..

You might look up patterns for that sort of winding if you have suitable thick cord to play around with. Round leather lace might work as well.
