I’m making a field notes leather cover for a Police Chief friend of mine. Originally I made one in black but lost much of the detail. I’m thinking dying this one tan or just leaving it natural color. Will decide once I’m done adding lettering.

Here is the first day book cover I made. As you can see when dyed solid black, you lose most of the eagle detail.

Thanks. I do like the black cover, it’s the color most officers carry.

Yeah, the black sorta 'works'.  Only RELIABLE way I've seen to do yellow and/or white is acrylics, and I tend to avoid acrylics on "flexy" articles that will see use.

I might have carved the thing 'inverted'to avoid excessive matting of the "halo".  Would have given a "beveled edge" look to the shield, which would work nicely since it's bordered.  Just think-out-loud noise.. pay no attention ;)

Nice work!

I'm sure that black is most frequently used but a lighter color shows off you work much better.

I think it would look great in Red but I don't know if that would be appropriate for this type of thing.

Thanks again.

I just finished this cover. Stitched with 277 bonded nylon thread. It will provide many years of service.

That's nice, works better than the black version.
Good job!
