I have just picked up a high post single needle model. It seems to stitch alright with thin thread but that doesn't really suit my purposes - uppers on heavy leather boots in conjunction with my Cowboy Outlaw. Most people use a lockstitch on uppers. .It will use up to a #5 cord (346 nylon) but you'll have big loops on the back side,so I think 138 would hold good & not be too big on the bottom. Seems there a fair number still in commercial use out there, surely they're running synthetic threads? Many moons ago the first one I ever worked on just wouldn't sew using 138 nylon.I mentioned it to someone & he said trying some cotton thread with some lube,it sewed great.The nylon doesn't hold the loop like the cotton does.
