leather not holding up to extreme elements

Recommended Posts

Hey guys wondering if you had any suggestion on how to make this leather hold up better to mud, dust, rain, sun, pressure washing with water ect.

This handle is about 4 months of hard use and looking pretty haggard. With these pre oiled/waxed leathers do I need to be coating them with something special like you would natural veg tanned leather?

leather:Badalassi Carlo Waxy - Oiled Pullup Veg Tanned Leather

so far this leather has been the best I've tried in terms of the raw edge not getting fuzzy after lots of washing

https://www.aacrack.co.uk/tanneries/badalassi-carlo/badalassi-carlo-minerva-box-cognac-15-17.html tells us they've used animal fat as the wax, and you've pummelled it out. What the original was is likely a trade secret, but https://www.leather-dictionary.com/index.php/Oils_%26_fats_in_the_leather_industry gives some idea. In general, a shoe polish will preserve the original leather, and might save this.

oh interesting thanks for the thoughts. any recommendation on shoe polish type or brand?

I'm not worried about saving this one, I make them and sell them so I'm just trying to make a product that holds up well. Typically worn leather has a nice look to it but this doesnt really take that on

You might check out Belt Grade California Latigo from The Hide House. It is has a firm finish and is very durable.

In the UK, we'd use Kiwi. Any non-liquid tin polish is likely to work. More generally, feed it with pure neetsfoot oil (not compound), then beeswax. It depends on how desperate it is.
