Found an old, informative, book on oiling and greasing leather

Recommended Posts

Found this on an information dive and wanted to share. Lots of useful info on oils and greases to use. The what, why, how, and how much.

The Application of Oils and Grease to Leather by J R Blockey 1919 - here

Thanks for sharing that with us.

I've never heard of 'greases' being applied to or into leather.

Something to keep in mind, that document address the Tanning processes and ingredients used to make tanned leather, not necessarily how to use oil, greases on finished (tanned) leathers.

If you look at catalog descriptions of harness leather they boast about the many 'stuffing' operations.  They are stuffing tallow, among other greases, into the leather to weather proof it.

Producing something akin to harness leather for small projects is actually what led me to find this book. A lot of terminology gets thrown around in product description but not a whole lot of explaination to go with it.
