Need to flatten old brittle leather

Recommended Posts

Hi!

JUst to start off, I'm not a leather worker, I am a picture framer.

I have recently been asked to frame a very old and intricately cut piece of leatherwork for a client. The problem is that it's not in any way flat enough to frame and I need to get it flat ASAP.

I have looked into it online, and I've seen a mixture of tips including wetting it with 50/50 water and alcohol, then ironing it. Using leather conditioners and also soaking it.

Before I attempt my of this, I would really appreciate some professional advise! The thin, delicate me very brittle!

thanks in advance :-)

My suggestion would be, to ask the owner to take it to a leather restorer to sort it out; and then give it to you to frame, it's not really a job to learn the skills on
