Tapered strap question

Recommended Posts

My first attempt at making a backpack (from a pattern I found on here) and I making shoulder straps that taper from 1.5” down to 1” in width. I’m going to bonding two layers using contact cement, then stitching.

My question is: do I cut the taper before or after the layers are bonded together?

After they are glued, right?

*edit to read tapering in width

I would cut after glueing.  If I did cut prior to glueing it would be only one side.  Which I did would be determined by the thickness of the leather pieces.

I cut the top to size and over cut the liner and trim on belts and straps.

Cut taper to top strap, glue then stitch. Once stitched trim back piece using top as guide by cutting straight down along the edge. Finish the edges.
