Leather hat patches

Recommended Posts

I’ve tried to find the answer to this but have failed. I need a way to sew leather patches to hats. Would it be best to do by hand, a manual machine like the cowboy outlaw or is an electric machine like the cobra 26 just over kill? All I see is people using things like the boss or electric. Haven’t been able to find anyone doing this by hand. Maybe I’m just missing something.

I do them by hand, punch your stitch holes around the patch and then contact cement onto the hat, careful that none shows outside the patch, then use a sharp to stitch it on! Takes about 10 minutes to do a saddle stitch, but I dont use two needles, I just backstitch all the way back to the start, hope this helps

To answer this more thoughtfully I have to ask what other if any, types of work you might want to do with a machine. A post machine would likely be best if that is all you want to do and they have a wide range of applications as well but ......some other jobs may be better with a cylinder machine and some with a flat bed and even one of those cheap Chinese patches may suit your budget better.

Sharp = a sharp needle, like a glovers needle

I like my Singer shoe patcher for that kind of stuff it can sew in circles without turning the hat.
