How to use a hand sewing punch?

Recommended Posts

I recently purchased a Hand Sewing Punch from TLF. However, I noticed that the puncher piece (the point that comes from the top part) was bent sideways in order to poke into the holes on the round bottom. This -- as far as I can tell -- was because the round hole-sizer piece on the bottom was made so that when it locks into a position (so as to allow a certain size hole to be punched), the hole on the round piece does not quite match with the hole on the frame (where the leather punchout falls out).

I hope this makes sense (I might post pictures about it. . .) because I would like to know something from anyone else who owns or knows about this tool: is the puncher piece supposed to be bent sideways, or is mine made incorrectly?

Thanks. . .

Are you talking about the punch I refer to as "The Starship Enterprise": it has a circular disc with various sized holes & rotates, but the round spear-shaped top stays in position?

If so, the top round spear- shaped item (puncher, to use your words) should not be bent sideways. It is meant to be removable & screws in & out for replacement, so it must be straight. If it was bent so that it can match up with all the rotating holes in the bottom plate, then I'd have to say you have a seriously misaligned frame. If it only matches up with 1 or 2 holes, your 'puncher' is bent. In either case, return it. Go on tandy's website & look up the illustration of the punch. You can get a fairly decent idea of how it should look.

It is difficult to judge without having pictures (& closeups, at that) to see. My descriptions may not make sense, either, especially if this is not the problem you're trying to describe, so if I'm wrong in what I'm visualizing, I apologize.

Inherently, they are well made punches, however, as with everything, things can go awry. My son had purchased a punch and after several weeks, one of the handles snapped off: obviously the casting was weak in that area. I've never had a problem with mine.

Yeah, it was a little messed up, but I got the punch replaced at Tandy. :spoton: Here are some closeup pictures of what it used to look like. Now, these were taken after I attempted to bend the puncher straight; you can see how off-center the round base piece was (it locked in place this way). . .

(Heh, yeah, there's a reflection of me on the punch, oh well. :P)

Wow! that was messed up: glad you got it replaced. Tandy has always been quite fair in replacing things & they do try to keep customers happy. Not all tools are made well & sometimes things slip through quality control, so if you get something defective, don't grumble- return it. A grumbling customer is an unhappy customer: and an unhappy customer won't be back. :fire:
