New Mallet makes a world of difference

Recommended Posts

So I had one of the cheap large mallets from Tandy and just replaced it with a 2 lb ASB Polyhead Maul, WOW what a difference that makes!!

It was well worth the investment!!!

ah now see you would have to go and say something like that... :head_hurts_kr: Now I am gonna be wondering if it will make as big a difference as the maul did, I have the Al Stohlman swivel knife, which one do you have?

I've got a couple of Henley's and absolutely love them. I've got a couple of the stacked leather Al Stohlman Brand knives and like them, but not as much as the Henley's. I plan to get a Robert Beard knife one of these days, but that's pretty steep.

I like mauls, better than mallets too. I have a Barry King tapered 16 oz maul for daily pounding. And a 2 lb Al Stohlman Brand maul for Basketweave, strap end cutters, punches, etc...

well i should of said above average lol...i had a couple of regular cheap cheap'os at first and they'd piss me off :ranting2: ...then bought Al's...which just that was a drastic difference...i strop each and every time before i carve...and it cuts smooth like butter...so i'm happy with it thus far...

i got the barry king 16oz tapered maul & to add i really dig the barry king edgers as well...

These are fantastic. I think better than Ron's edgers, Osborne, etc... I haven't tried Gomph or some of the oldies, but for what's available, These are top shelf edgers.

i don't. But I think there are instructions on how to make one yourself out of a craftool beveler in one of the Al Stohlman books.

I use an Osborne push beveler some, especially outside beadlines to break that edge over. Got it in a trade, but probably wouldn't run out to replace it right away after a loss.

I like Barry's bevelers also, and wish Bob Douglas was still making his bisonettes so I could fill the set (lesson learned). I also like the round bottom and vizzard style that Jeremiah Watt sells. The big key I think for any of the edgers is not how well they cut out of the box, but how easy they are to sharpen and maintain. These guys all fit that criteria. I traded off my Ron's edgers several years ago, and they were good too.

I like Barry's mauls and have a 12 oz and 16 oz straight for tooling. I like my Wayne Jueschke tapered mauls (1 and 2 pound) for baskets and geometrics. They are more head heavy, Barry's are more neutral weighted. I use a heavier maul from Barry for punches.
