New Here. First Leatherworking Project Ever.

Recommended Posts

Ok.. So the evolution of the last 48 hours.. Someone graciously gave me a new Mora Clipper. It came in a horrible case. Being an member of another bushcraft forum, I was quickly encouraged to make my own. So, I went to Tandy Leather yesterday and bought some leather, string, snaps and a punch. I watched a tutorial and spent the night making the below sheath. I've never touched leather in my life and don't feel I did to terrible and am wanting to move on to another to correct the mistakes I learned on the first one. But I have a question.. I have bought oil dye and acrylic resolene. Is this all I need to finish it? Any suggestions on homemade daubs to apply? Do I need to clean the leather at all?

Thanks!

Welcome to the forum! Nice knife and sheath you have completed there.

I would HIGHLY suggest that you try this dye and finish out on a piece of leather from that same hide you bought before you put it on this pretty thing. Remember let each dyeing job and coat dry for least 24 hours before starting on the next stage of your process. I haven't done one sheath to date, but I heard that Chuck Burrow's video on making such an item is highly advisable. Mr. Burrows is a member on this forum if you need information. Good luck and remember to report your progress!

If you totally screw up your dyeing on the scrap of leather remember two things!

You will not be the first one and it will not be your first time!

Best wishes!

Thank you.. I realize its not a piece of art but some day...

I have another question.. From all the working, etc, there are a lot of nicks and lines.. Can I wet it again and smooth them out? How would be the best way to do that?

Well, here it is after the dyeing. Going to protect it with Resolene which I haven't applied yet. Not thrilled with the black, would have stitched it with a different color string had I known.
