Cutting Mat

Recommended Posts

Wasn't sure where to ask this one, so I'll start here.....

What kind of plastic or rubber is the cutting mat that they sell at tandy? The black rubber kind.

I am wanting to make a table for cutting rather than just having a small piece and I need to know what to surf the web for so I can find a 4x4 to 4x8 sheet of it.

Thanks!

The black mat stuff from Tandy's more for punching. It gets cut through pretty easily. If you cover your entire table with it, it will get pretty scarred up. I wanted to cover my table with something that I could cut directly on so I went to TAP plastics and got a piece of cutting board material cut to the dimensions of my table. You can use a pretty thin one (like 1/8") since you'll never cut through it. The material's nice and they can basically cut to whatever dimensions you want. Not terribly expensive either.

Then if you want to use a punching surface, keep using the tandy punch mats.

The stuff you need is called HDPE get the 3\4" or 1 inch. I have the 1" red it ain't cheap but it works the best. It comes in a sheet or half sheet or any size you might want. Ebay has

lots of it so does the web use search engine for HDPE sheet.

The HDPE appears to be a rigid plastic as well. I am needing a rubber mat.

I saw where someone was using a horse stall mat, I may pick one up at tractor supply and see how it works.
