Leather shield cover

Recommended Posts

I just finished this for a customer. This is a leather shield cover for a center boss kite style shield. It will be used for fighting in the SCA. It's been tooled and dyed with his heraldry. Any comments would be appreciated...

Thanks,

Sandy

Here's the finished product....Sorry, it didn't go through on the initial post.

I'm not, I'm an Easterner, but that spearhead looks EXACTLY like the insignia for the Army's Surface Deployment and Distribution Command, formerly Military Traffic Management Command, based at Ft Eustis VA. I wore that insignia while I was deployed to Kuwait as a transportation officer.

Too funny. Maybe he's a former transporter, too.

You gave in too easily. I was looking for a reason to go digging through St Gabriels' archives. My wife is the former Asterisk and Arbalest Pursuivant for Ansteorra, so I kinda got a crash course in heraldry.

Good work though. How well does it hold up in combat?

St. Gabriel's wouldn't have done you any good; they're strictly onomastics (names). What you want is the Ordinary and Armorial, at http://oanda.sca.org -- and that will only help if the arms are registered. As it turns out, they are, and under that very name.

I speak blazon fluently. :-) I've been a herald for years: three-time Town Crier at Pennsic and Court Herald to Brion and Anna when they ruled the East in 2006. I mostly do vocal heraldry (courts and tournaments), but I've been known to dip my toes in the O and A from time to time.

Thanks Damon

As for combat, he just received it and were waiting to see the results. But, the idea came from one that has been used on the field for ten years or more. And still looks great.

Hi Sandy,

Beautiful work! Have you heard from Jonathan yet if it holds up well? I am curious about scuffing. Not sure if he's had a chance to use it yet since there aren't many events going on right now, but I did see him at a fighting event in January, so maybe he used it there. I am in the Barony of Sacred Stone, Greensboro area, so not too terribly far from you.

I was wondering, was this over a wood or aluminum blank (or something else?)? How did you attach it?

Thanks for sharing!

Lisa

Very Nice! I am interested in doing something similar, and was wondering if you could give more details on the construction of your piece. How did you attach the leather, how did you do the edging, etc. My shield is aluminum, so tacking is an issue. I was also planning on tooling it, so any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Gracie
